Biography

Dr. Abdulhadi Shoufan has an PhD from the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt, Germany, 2007. From 2008 to 2010, he led the “Security Hardware” research team at the Center of Advanced Security Research Darmstadt. In that period, he led a project on post-quantum cryptography for the Federal Office of Information Security in Germany. Dr. Shoufan joined Khalifa University in 2011 and worked on different projects for Boeing, Lockheed Martin, PSEG, and TII. He is interested in zero-trust architecture, embedded security, cryptographic hardware, and safe and secure drone operations. Dr. Shoufan has a strong profile in educational research, cognitive-constructive learning, and educational technology. He pioneered lecture-free instruction. He received multiple teaching awards from the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt and secured multiple research grants from the Hess State Ministry of Higher Education, the UAE Ministry of Education, and the Center of Teaching and Learning at Khalifa University.

Research Projects

Chip-to-Chip Zero-Trust Architecture

In this project we design, implement, and test new hardware and hardware/software architectures to enable chip-to-chip authentication towards a zero trust-based system design. These architectures will help fight against chip supply chain attacks such as hardware trojans, intellectual property theft, and overproduction. At the core of these architectures is the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM), which represents a reliable solution based on public-key infrastructure and certificates.  This project is funded by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII).

Lecture-free instruction on learn-smarlty.com

Lecture-free teaching and learning is an attractive form of education in which students learn by completing learning activities without listening to lectures or watching videos. Such design is especially suitable for computer engineering and computer science courses that convey hands-on experience in addition to conceptual knowledge. This approach is in use at Khalifa University since 2018 through a platform called learn-smartly.com. This project aims at testing this platform at selected universities within the UAE to validate the effectiveness and the acceptance of lecture-free instruction.  This project is funded by the Ministry of Education in the context of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Smart Learning Program.

LEEVS: Learn with Experts-Endorsed Videos

YouTube is becoming a vital source for formal and informal education. As a social medium, however, this platform allows every member to upload videos, which has led to the spread of low-quality and misleading content on YouTube. This situation has created an increasing demand for decision-assistance tools that help learners find useful content. In this project, we develop and test LEEVS, which is a gateway between learners and YouTube. LEEVS helps learners find high-quality content based on experts' endorsement. This project is funded by the Ministry of Education in the context of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Smart Learning Program.
