Fifth Gulf Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Institute Symposium Held at KU

Experts from around the world discuessed advances in nuclear safeguards security and safety.

Khalifa University held the fifth annual Gulf Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Institute (GNEII) Symposium at the Abu Dhabi Campus April 20-21 2014.  The symposium brought together nuclear energy experts from around the world to discuss issues of nuclear safety security and safeguards and to hear presentations by GNEII fellows.  A graduation ceremony was held on the last day. 

GNEII fellows from the Federal Authority of Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA) in the UAE underwent more than 400 hours of training as part of the course.  Instructors came from Khalifa University Texas A&M University Sandia National Laboratories and the World Institute for Nuclear Security.

The keynote speaker for the event was Al Sharif Nasser bin Nasser Managing Director of the Middle East Scientific Institute for Security based in Amman Jordan. His work focuses on addressing chemical biological radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks across the region. He spoke to the audience about regional perspectives on nuclear security.

The fellows presented Capstone projects ranging from “Evaluation of Threats by Drones to a Nuclear Power Plant ” to “Investigations on the Sensitivity of UAE Domestic Agricultural Production to Radiological Contamination.”  Other topics included “Operational Security and Information Protection in the Areas of 3S” and “Analysis of the Safeguards Measures for the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Back-End Options in the UAE.”

GNEII is the result of a partnership between Khalifa University Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) and Texas A&M University’s Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute (NSSPI). The program provides nuclear energy leaders with an enhanced understanding of the safety safeguards and security.

Dr. Habiba Al Safar’s Research Included in Nobel Museum Traveling Exhibition in Dubai

One of Five Emirati Scientists Featured in “Ideas Changing the World” Exhibit.

 

Dr. Habiba Al Safar assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering at Khalifa University is one of five Emirati scientists whose research is included in the Nobel Museum Traveling Exhibition at the Burj Khalifa Annex in Dubai.

“The Nobel Prize: Ideas Changing the World” Exhibit sponsored by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation showcases how Nobel Prize-awarded efforts have shaped and continue to change our world.

The exhibition consists of five pavilions dealing with five different themes:

  • The Nobel Prize provides an introduction to the Nobel Prize and its areas.
  • Alfred Nobel presents Alfred Nobel his inventions and industrial operations and the background to his will.
  • The Nobel Prize Over the Decades gives an overview of the history of the Nobel Prize and of

Abu Dhabi Hosts 2015 BCS Networking Forum

Khalifa University Welcomes Record New Intake of Students

477 new students have joined the University its largest class since its inception in 2008.

Khalifa University Welcomes Record New Intake of Students 2015Khalifa University welcomed 477 new undergraduate preparatory and graduate students for the 2015-16 academic year. This represents the largest intake of new students since the University was created by a Decree in 2008 in Abu Dhabi. This new intake represents the rapid growth of the University as it prepares to open its new Abu Dhabi campus in 2016 and as it expands its undergraduate and graduate program offerings. Just this year the University has begun offering a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics with optional concentrations in Financial Mathematics/Mathematical Biology in addition to having achieved ABET accreditation for six of its other undergraduate engineering programs.

The vast majority of the new students 423 were admitted into undergraduate programs and 54 students were admitted into graduate programs including the Masters programs in International and Civil Security Nuclear Engineering Information Security and various engineering specializations. Of the incoming graduate students 18 matriculated into the University’s PhD in Engineering Program which offers the option to specialize in Electrical and Computer Mechanical Aerospace Biomedical Nuclear or Robotics Engineering.

“We’re very pleased with our admissions this year ” said Dr. Tod Laursen President of Khalifa University. “It’s always wonderful to see the university continue to grow and thrive and to welcome new ambitious students to our community. In addition to accepting more students we are also noticing an increase in the quality of the students we are admitting. Khalifa University Alumni Reconnect at Prestigious Gala Dinner

Dinner was hosted at Khalifa University’s Abu Dhabi campus and included alumni from 1994 to the present

Khalifa University recently held its third annual Alumni Reunion Gala Dinner at its Abu Dhabi campus. Graduates attended the event from 1994 to the latest graduating class of 2013 many of whom are industry leaders and hold senior positions in government and the private sector.

The event was organized by the University’s Alumni Association which is charged with developing events programs and initiatives to connect the University with its alumni employers current and prospective students.

Entertainment at the event included an exhibition of current student projects the presentation of awards to active alumni including two recent alumni speakers Ebrahim Al Alkeem and Talal Salim Al Sabiri who spoke to students about their achievements and work experience and stage performances by entertainers.

“It’s always wonderful to gather our alumni together to catch up and see how they are doing and to show them what our current students and faculty are up to ” said Dr. Arif Al Hammadi Executive Vice President of Khalifa University. “Our alumni are key players in the UAE and they’re input and assistance is of great benefit to our students and to the University as a whole.  We are pleased that they are so involved with the university hosting speaker’s series and mentorships as well as arranging internships and work experience opportunities. All of this is hugely beneficial to our current students.”

Alumni who attended the event spoke about how much they enjoyed reuniting with old classmates and professors meeting fellow alumni and the importance of continuing to support the University.

The Alumni Gala Dinner provides an opportunity for our alumni to socialize and network with their peers and serves as a reminder of the extraordinary connection they have to each other because of this remarkable institution. Khalifa University offers several extensive undergraduate programs in Aerospace Engineering Biomedical Engineering Civil Engineering Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a concentration in Power Systems Industrial and Systems Engineering Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering with a concentration in Software Systems.

Graduate degrees at Khalifa University are awarded for independent investigation into specialized areas of communication computer or electronics engineering in KU’s Master’s by Research program students can specialize in Electrical and Computer Mechanical Aerospace Biomedical Nuclear or Robotics Engineering.  Students also have the option of pursuing a Master’s in Information Security or a Master’s in Nuclear Engineering.
