Khalifa University Appoints Emiratis to Several Senior Positions

KU also supplies the job market with highly qualified Emirati talent.

As part of its efforts to support Emiratization Khalifa University has added several new Emirati talents to its leadership team with four Emiratis being appointed to significant senior positions. They are namely Mr. Mosallam Al Kathiri who was made Vice President of Human Resources and Procurement Dr. Samer Al Samahi was appointed Director of EBTIC an Etisalat BT and Khalifa University partnership that’s supported by ICT Fund. In addition Dr. Habiba Al Safar was made the Director of The Khalifa University Center for Biotechnology (KUCEB) and Dr. Hassan Obeid Ali Al Muhairi is the new Director of Graduate Studies at Khalifa University.

These appointments come at a time when Khalifa University is excelling in its efforts to supplement the job market with Emiratis who enjoy pursuing top academic research and education positions. This has been achieved by providing unique undergraduate and graduate programs state-of-the-art research facilities and scholarship programs which encourage students to engage in various activities that will inevitably contribute to the labor market. Students also benefit from strategic partnerships with a number of leading government and industry organizations both in the UAE and internationally.

“We are pleased to witness the Emiratization of some senior positions at Khalifa University” said Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi Khalifa University’s Executive Vice President “This supports our mission as a University and that we are thriving in our task to enable Emiratis to lead in key sectors especially in the fields of science technology engineering and research. We hope that these appointments will contribute to a sustainable vision that aims to support the role that Emirati citizens play in order to contribute effectively in the economic development efforts being spearheaded by leadership of the UAE.”

In the past Mr. Al Kathiri has directed and overseen all aspects of corporate human resource functions and administrative activities including planning and compensation HR and administrative automation training development Emiratization and recruitment. He has a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management and he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Washington University.

“It’s an honor to join the team leading a University like Khalifa University which holds the name of the President” said Mr. Al Kathiri “Khalifa University graduates generations of high-level Emirati researchers academics and professionals. My goal is to work on supporting the University’s efforts in the field of human resources and especially Emiratization both through recruitment and training and by providing a suitable environment that graduates students who will lead important sectors in the UAE.”

Prior to his appointment as Director Dr. Al Samahi acted as Deputy Director for EBTIC and as a faculty member for Khalifa University. Dr. Al Samahi obtained his BSc. in Engineering from Khalifa University before being sponsored to attend Melbourne University for his MSc. and Newcastle University for his PhD in Wireless Communication.

In addition to Dr. Al Samahi’s appointment EBTIC strives to provide work experience for students and innovation training for UAE national engineers by providing internships job opportunities after graduation and secondments to professionals seeking development opportunities. EBTIC has so far trained 120 Emirati students since inception. Additionally EBTIC hosts 9 full-time Emirati researchers and it contributes to the efforts of lifting Emirati capabilities in various scientific research fields.

“Our goal is to provide the UAE with a world-class ICT research and innovation center that will serve key sectors in the country. Under my direction I hope to see EBTIC continue to make great strides in innovation and invention and to continue to be a leader in important areas like patent production and human capital development” said Dr. Al Samahi.

As a Director of Graduate Studies at Khalifa University Dr. Hassan Al Muhairi will provide leadership to the Graduate Studies Office of the University and will be responsible for the effective development implementation and administration of graduate programs strategies policies procedures processes and quality control. In his role as an assistant professor Dr. Al Muhairi has supervised a number of student teams that have achieved high rankings in reputable competitions. Dr. Hassan Al Muhairi holds a BS in Computer Engineering from Khalifa University. He earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Essex in the UK and his PhD in Electronic Systems Engineering from the same university.

“It is with great pride that I will be leading Graduate Studies at Khalifa University and that I will help push efforts to graduate more Emirati researchers who will be able to participate in the process of building and developing a sustainable knowledge-based economy which will in turn contribute to the realization of Abu Dhabi’s and the UAE’s vision in the near future” said Dr. Al Muhairi commenting on his appointment as a Director of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Al Safar is currently an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Khalifa University and has recently been recognized as one of the most powerful women in the Arab world by ArabianBusiness.com. The Emirati researcher came in 52nd for her extensive work with Type II Diabetes specifically in her successful identification of genetic and environmental risk factors associated with diabetes. She was also recently awarded the 2014 L’Oreal-UNESCO Fellowship Award for Women in Science as well as having received the first Emirates International Award for Genetic Diseases Prevention in the category of Best Scientific Researcher in the field of Genetic Diseases Prevention.

Under Dr. Al Safar’s leadership KUCEB will be a hub for research and development encouraging interdisciplinary translational research with industry in order to develop the nation’s pharmaceutical healthcare biotechnology and life sciences sector. Dr. Al Safar has a PhD in Biomedical and Forensic Science from the University of Western Australia a M.Sc. in Medical Engineering from the University of Liverpool in the UK and a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Biochemistry from San Diego State University in the US.
