Khalifa Universitys Student Clubs Show What They Have to Offer

Special Club Day featured displays and games to attract new members.

Khalifa University student clubs held a special day in order to attract new members and show plans for future activities. The daylong event was held on September 30 at the University’s Abu Dhabi campus attracting many of the University’s students as well as faculty and staff. 

Clubs displaying that day included student branches of professional societies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Other clubs included ones for Debate Literature Arabic Media Photography Theater and Anime.  There was also a booth for the Emirati Club which helps host major events like National Day and Flag Day. Khalifa University’s Student Council also had a booth to spread awareness of their activities among students and to premier new clubs like story writing and gastronomy.  

“The Theater and Talent Club really tries to promote students creativity we have a lot of departments within the club that suits many talents like costume and set design script writing and more ” said Mohammed Naqi. “We’re very involved in lots of activities all years we put on plays and productions and help with the National Day.  We even made a historical movie called The Battle of Kaidabaa which was received well.” 

Student Pledge at Student Club Day at Khalifa UniversityIn addition to Club displays the University’s Student Council also held an Academic Pledge event.  Students were able to sign their name to a large board to show their commitment to upholding academic integrity and abiding to the rules of the University and the UAE. 

“The academic pledge reminds our students how to act and tells them why they shouldn’t cheat or plagiarize and that they should abide by the University’s rules ” Hamad Alaydaroos President of the Student Council.  “As a student council we are trying to get students involved and create a lifestyle that engages our students and helps them show their creativity.” 

Club Day at Khalifa UniversityKhalifa University strives to provide students with a well-rounded education that includes the pursuit of activities outside of the students’ academic careers and majors.  Promoting student run clubs is an important part of achieving this goal as well as creating a sense of community spirit and an exciting atmosphere for current and future students and alumni. 

Fatima Alshehhi from the Korean Club said “We had a lot of students who were fascinated with the Korean culture so we made a club to celebrate that.  We organize an entire day called Han day and we bring in Korean performers foods and learn to write our names in Korean.  I think it’s important to learn about other cultures in order to open your mind and the Korean Club helps does this.”

36 Students Learn the Value of Collaboration, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Bootcamp

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp held by Etisalat BT Innovation Center at Khalifa University

Under the patronage of His Excellency Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi UAE’s Minister of Education the Etisalat-BT Innovation Center (EBTIC) established in partnership with Khalifa University held the last day of its exciting “Bootcamp” for school students on April 7 2015. The closing ceremony which was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education Khalifa Fund and the ICT Fund in addition to Khalifa University and EBTIC management BT and parents saw students Sara Al Muhairi and Mohammed Al Hammadi awarded for their excellence and one team won the first place and was awarded 25 000 AED for their work on a parked car cooling system.

Winners of EBTIC Innovation Bootcamp

“I wasn’t sure I wanted to come to this ” said student Rashid Abdullah Alyammahi. “I was reluctant because it was during my school holidays but I came and I’m glad I did. I learned a lot and I got to meet new people and learn about their strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has different strengths and now we know how to use those strengths to solve problems. I hope I can do this again next year.”

The students ranging from grades 10 to 12 were selected from schools from across the UAE. The bootcamp taught them the value of collaboration and innovation through team building and problem solving. Students were given “problems” unique to the UAE to solve and were required to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. In addition to workable solutions to the “problems” students were expected to conduct research into potential competitors and develop a business plan. In addition to the winning parked car cooling system some of the problems the students worked on were a smart irrigation system self-monitoring water taps respiratory protection for asthma sufferers a device for diabetes detection and a car accident alert system.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of this exciting bootcamp ” said Dr. Mohammed Al Mualla EBTIC’s Board Member and Senior Vice President of Research and Development for Khalifa University. “The instructors who came to us from Dublin where they have been running this camp for the last six years were very impressed with our students’ creativity positive attitudes and eagerness to learn. The confidence and enthusiasm demonstrated by the students speaks to the culture of innovation and ingenuity that the UAE is so carefully fostering through the National Innovation Strategy. The youths who attended this event are the future of this country and their approach to problem solving to collaboration and cooperation and their dedication to the future of their country is truly inspiring.”

The Bootcamp was conducted in collaboration with Khalifa University BT and the University College of Dublin (UCD Dublin) and with educational partnership from the UAE Ministry of Education the Abu Dhabi Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET) Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) Applied Technical High Schools (ATHS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) UAE section. Khalifa University Hosts 5th Annual English for Specific Purposes Conference

Conference Attracts English-Language Instructors from Across the UAE.

Khalifa University recently hosted TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Arabia’s 5th Annual ESP (English for Specific Purposes) Conference. This year’s conference focused on “Expanding the ESP Boundaries: Change. Challenge. Opportunity” and featured speakers presenters and exhibitors from across the UAE. 

The 5th Annual ESP Conference provided an opportunity for practitioners to share insights into ESP-related matters and contribute to a stimulating and dynamic exchange of ideas in research practice training and assessment.

Speakers at the conference included Dr. Ali Shehadeh Professor and Chair of the Department of Linguistics and Department of Translation Studies UAE University Al Ain who discussed “Utilizing Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in the ESP Classroom.”

Dr. Maher Bahloul Associate Professor of English and Linguistics at the American University of Sharjah and Director and General Manager of an Education Through Arts Institute – Maher Language Institute (MLI) presented on “ESP Students’ Group Presentations: Injecting Acting and Humor.”

In addition to these distinguished speakers there were more than 20 concurrent sessions on a variety of topics related to the field of ESP. Exhibitors including top international textbook and materials publishers were available to showcase and discuss their current offerings in the field.

According to Fathi Ben Mohamed TESOL Arabia’s Abu Dhabi Chapter Representative “The recent increase in ESP publications conference presentations professional gatherings websites and resources and ESP research all testify to the fact that ESP is gaining interest in multiple educational settings. This year’s ESP Conference grew in popularity with around 150 attendees. Our presenters included practitioners from K12 through university settings from all over the UAE as well as some who traveled from Oman and Qatar for the event.”

“Khalifa University is pleased to have hosted this event ” said President Tod Laursen. “As a University that conducts instruction in English but whose students primarily speak English as a second language it’s important to us to continue to explore and develop the ways that we teach and instruct so that we can better convey our message to our students. Conferences like these that allow peers to get together and discuss the latest developments in their field are a wonderful way to invigorate and encourage our instructors.”

KU Students Claim First Prize in 2015 Engineering Students Ethics Competition

Competition Hosted Universities from around the GCC.

A Khalifa University team took first place in the 7th Engineering Students Ethics Competition (ESEC 2015) held at the University’s Sharjah Campus. The event was sponsored by Emirates Advanced Investments Group (EAI) and was organized by Khalifa University and the KU student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The team of Shamma Abdelrahman Saleh Nasir Almazmi Sara Abdulla Ahmad Bahlooq and Mohammad Ali Mohammad Rashed Alsharid earned top honors for KU. The second prize was awarded to the Ajman University of Science and Technology team of Roua Abdulrahim Armita Farsiani and Yasmine Saoud. Third prize was awarded to the American University of Sharjah team of Shouq Darwish Yomna Omar and Eiman Ayman Mahmoud Elghanam.

The competition provided engineering students with the opportunity to demonstrate their appreciation of ethical issues and responsibilities. The prime objectives were to foster familiarity with the IEEE Code of Ethics and ethical concepts; to promote a model for discussing and analyzing ethical questions; to provide experience in applying ethical concepts to typical professional situations; and to enhance engineering students’ understanding of their ethical duties as professionals.

Eight teams from eight major institutions representing the UAE Kuwait Oman and Bahrain participated in ESEC2015.

“This year’s event forms part of our continued commitment to ensure that we provide engineering students with that vital link between the theoretical knowledge gained at university with applied engineering situations. We believe that the challenges this competition provides will greatly assist students as they prepare to enter the job market after graduation.”

Khalifa University Wraps Up IAEA Nuclear Energy Management School

35 UAE and 11 International Participants Graduate from NEM.

Khalifa University wrapped up the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Nuclear Energy Management (NEM) School on May 28 2015 in Abu Dhabi with a presentation of group projects and a graduation ceremony attended by Najat Mokhtar Director for Asia and the Pacific Department of Technical Cooperation IAEA. This is the second time the NEM School has been hosted in the UAE the first was in 2012. The school which began on May 17 was hosted in collaboration with the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA).  

Participants consisted of 35 young UAE professionals who are currently working for the national nuclear energy program alongside 11 international participants from Bangladesh Indonesia Jordan Malaysia the Philippines Qatar Saudi Arabia Sri Lanka Thailand and Vietnam.  

NEM 2015 was opened by remarks from Mikhail Chudakov Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy at the IAEA who emphasized how important it is for future nuclear managers to acquire managerial competencies.

More than 30 experts from the IAEA and other institutions provided lectures to the participants over the two-week course which saw students look at a myriad of issues from the history of nuclear power to the lifecycle of a plant issues surrounding radiation waste management human resource development nuclear law and nuclear security. Courses were taught by instructors experienced in the management of nuclear energy facilities in order to pass on best practices.
