Biography

Prof. Abdu Adem (Biosketch)  

Professor Dr. Abdu Adem received his Ph.D from Uppsala University (Sweden) in Pharmacology in 1987. Following a postdoctoral training at the Institute Pasteur (Paris, France), CNRS (France) and Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) Prof. Adem accepted a postdoctoral position at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. In 1991, while still at the Karolinska Institute, he received his Docent title (Habilitation).  

In 1999 he was recruited from the Karolinska Institute to join the College of Medicine and Health Sciences   at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU)  in Al Ain as a full Professor. In 2020 Prof. Adem joined the College of Medicine, Khalifa University, in Abu Dhabi 

Prof.  Adem’s long-term goal has been to develop a vigorous functional neuroscience research, education, and training program. The main focus of his research has been neurodegeneration and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease.  

Another aspect of his research has been towards understanding the biology of diabetes and its complications especially in the light that 24-28% of the United Arab Emirates population suffers from diabetes.  

Prof. Adem has published over 245 manuscripts (Citations Scopus: 5255, H-index: 40 ).  Most of his work is published in top ranking journals of his field. Prof. Adem and his team have patented two groups of novel anti-cancer compounds and three new anti-diabetic compounds as potential new drugs and has two new pending anti-diabetic patents.

 

Prof. Adem has been very successful in securing both intramural and extramural grant support from various funding agencies including the European Union, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Grant Award, College of Medicine UAEU, United Arab Emirates University, Khalifa University. 

  

Prof. Adem has been very instrumental in supervising several graduate (17 Ph.D and 4 Masters) and undergraduate (more than 150) students. Prof. Adem also serves on the the Editorial Board of a number of journals and works as an ad hoc reviewer for several international journals.

Prof. Adem has received several research awards from UAEU as well as from Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences. 

 

Prof. Adem was nominated for Mohamed Bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Distinguishment and was short listed by the American Academy of Sciences as one of the top scientists in the United Arab Emirates. He was awarded the Golden visa (10 years visa) by the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Prof. Adem is a member of Mohamed Bin Rashid Academy of Scientists (MBRAS).
