We Found WHAT in the UAE's Rocks? Ft. ADNOC
January 30, 2026, 6:59 pm
In this episode of KU Pulse – the podcast, Ahmed Alzaabi, Khalifa University alumnus and Engineer and Researcher in Carbon and Hydrogen Storage, ADNOC, discusses how gases behave beneath the Earth’s surface and its importance in the future of clean energy and climate action.
Moderated by Dr. Glenda El Gamal, Senior Lecturer in the General Education Unit, Khalifa University, the conversation explores how hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen move through carbonate rock formations common to the UAE.
Using high-resolution 3D X-ray imaging, Ahmed explains how scientists can observe gas movement and translate laboratory findings into real-world applications.
The discussion connects science to practical challenges facing the energy transition: storing surplus renewable energy as hydrogen, permanently securing carbon dioxide underground, and designing safer, more effective storage systems that support net-zero ambitions.
Ahmed also reflects on the risks, limitations, and long-term implications of underground gas storage, offering a clear-eyed view of both promise and responsibility.
