Biography

Dr. Khan received his PhD the field of Neuropharmacology from The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia where he conducted research in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS), a common neurodegenerative disease affecting young adults. His current translational research is aimed at exploring pathological insights associated with demyelination and axonal loss to develop breakthrough remyelinating therapies for treating MS and other neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Khan is also a dedicated mentor and educator, training the next generation of pharmacology researchers and inspiring them to pursue innovative approaches to drug discovery.

Research
Research Interests
  • Identification of druggable targets for neurodegeneration
  • Pre-clinical trials of novel drug treatments for treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Studying clinical biomarkers to predict relapse in MS disease
  • Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) / Sepsis

Research Projects

Multiple sclerosis:

To investigate the therapeutic efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity profile of novel drug treatments using the Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model, Cuprizone mouse model, and in-vitro models. To delineate the pathological role of Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) in triggering MS disease using preclinical and clinical samples. To delineate the pathological role of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in secondary-progressive MS (SP-MS) disease using preclinical and clinical samples.
