Biography

Professor Laurent Najman is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Khalifa University, a position he assumed in August 2025. His distinguished career spans both pioneering industrial research and impactful academic leadership.

His journey began after earning his Ingénieur degree from the Ecole des Mines de Paris in 1991. He spent three years at the Central Research Laboratories of Thomson-CSF, focusing on infrared image segmentation using mathematical morphology. In 1995, he became the Director of Research and Development for the start-up Animation Science.

Under his technical leadership, the company's particle systems technology received prestigious accolades, including the "European Information Technology Prize 1997" and recognition as one of the "Hottest Products of the Year 1996" by Computer Graphics World.

In 1998, Professor Najman joined OCÉ Print Logic Technologies as a Senior Scientist, where he addressed image analysis challenges related to scanning and printing.

He transitioned to academia in 2002, accepting a role as a Full Professor at the Computer Sciences Department of ESIEE, Paris. There, he led the A3SI team of the Laboratoire d’Informatique Gaspard Monge, Université Gustave Eiffel.

Academically, he received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics with the highest honor (Félicitations du Jury) from Paris-Dauphine University in 1994 and his Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches from the University of Marne-la-Vallée in 2006. Since January 2025, he has served as the President of AFRIF, the French branch of the International Association for Pattern Recognition.

His current research focuses on the topology of discrete structures like graphs and simplicial complexes, utilizing discrete mathematical morphology and discrete optimization.
