Vasileios E. Katzourakis is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. He completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Patras, where his research focused on the three-dimensional transport and co-transport of pollutants in porous media. He also holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the same institution, with a thesis on the numerical modeling of biocolloidal-colloidal co-transport in porous media, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
Dr. Katzourakis' research interests encompass environmental engineering, with a particular focus on the fate and transport of colloids and biocolloids in environmental systems. He specializes in the mathematical and numerical modeling of nanoparticle transport, developing custom solutions for complex particle transport problems, and applying new technologies to address existing environmental challenges.
He has developed and released several software tools, including ColloidFit, a simulation and fitting software designed to model the transport and attachment of colloids and biocolloids in 1-D porous media. ColloidFit is equipped with a user-friendly JavaFX graphical interface and leverages the Pest fitting software to produce confidence intervals and fit experimental data.
Dr. Katzourakis has extensive experience in both academic and professional settings. Prior to his current role, he was a Research Associate at the Technical University of Crete, where he was involved in various environmental engineering research projects. He has also worked as a self-employed civil engineer, gaining practical experience in designing blueprints, inspecting structures, and conducting building renovations.
He is a certified member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and has been actively involved in several research projects, including the BioNFate project, which studied the fate and transport of biocolloids and nanoparticles in groundwater and their impact on public health.
In addition to his professional work, Dr. Katzourakis has a strong interest in programming, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, and enjoys building personal projects with micro-electronics such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino. He is passionate about using technology to solve important global challenges.
Dr. Katzourakis has published several peer-reviewed articles in top-tier journals, covering topics such as solar irradiance forecasting, advanced primary filtration in wastewater treatment, and the transport of aggregating nanoparticles in water-saturated porous media. His work continues to contribute significantly to the field of environmental engineering.
