Khalifa University Students Experience the World of Clean Energy

Students attended a month long internship with UK based clean energy giant Amec Foster Wheeler.

Five Khalifa University students had the opportunity to delve into the world of clean energy during their recent internship with British energy company Amec Foster Wheeler. Hussain Abdullaziz Hind Alhamiri Budour Al Yammahi Alanoud Alabdouli and Abdelaziz Alzaabi were all chosen to travel to the UK in order to gain hands on experience with a wide variety of sustainable energy options that the company runs.

The month-long visit gave students the opportunity to be introduced to the operations of the company’s training rig facilities and laboratories the Hunterston power station and visits to the National Nuclear Laboratory’s Cumbria labs the Gen2 training centre (where they viewed a simulator of the Pressurized Water Reactor) and the Dalton Nuclear Institute at the University of Manchester and the institute’s facility in Cumbria UK.

They also engaged in interactive seminars and training sessions in reliability engineering scheduling and design software project management commercial awareness and technical sketching as well as engaging in an engineering practical where they discussed and derived key Critical Safety Functions and Safety Functional Requirements before moving on to apply this as part of a case study.

Hussain commented on his experience saying “I had prior opinions about the nuclear industry. However upon completing this visit my opinions have changed. I would now consider joining the nuclear industry.”

“We are very pleased that our students had the opportunity to travel to the UK to work with Amec Foster Wheeler and experience the myriad ways they can work in the clean energy sector ” said Dr. Tod Laursen President. “Nuclear energy is at the center of the UAE’s future energy goals and spurring student interest in working in this sector is vitally important. Khalifa University is dedicated to developing the UAE’s nuclear energy leaders and clean energy leaders of tomorrow and these exciting internships are a part of that journey.”

KU Students Earn First and Second Place in Mobile App Contest

MAC requires teams to submit original culturally focused apps.

Khalifa University students competed successfully in the Mobile Application Contest (MAC2015) on April 19 2015. First place went to the “AirBook: Augmented Immersive Reality Book” app from Mohammed Wael Bazzaza and Mona Al Zubaidi. Second place went to Fahad Al Shaibani for a “Diabetic Foot Detector” app.

A total of 21 one apps were submitted from seven universities across the UAE.

Organized annually by Khalifa University MAC requires student teams to submit original culturally focused apps. The contest fosters the creation of innovative mobile applications and provides participants with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate mobile computing skills. Select participants are offered business development assistance to transform applications into commercial products.

“Khalifa University has been successfully running this competition since 2006 ” said Khalifa University Executive Vice President Dr. Arif Al Hammadi. “And every year we see technologies advance with more submissions and increasingly innovative apps some of which were adopted commercially by different industries. Innovation entrepreneurship and creativity are the keys to the development of the knowledge economy and the achievement of the National Innovation Strategy and by challenging youths with exciting competitive contests such as MAC we are driving them to excel and to invent.  It is Khalifa University’s goal to foster the research and development environment in the UAE and organizing events like this one are an important way in which we do that.”

Second Session of Work Readiness Program Ends

Program taught recent graduates interview skills leadership and communication techniques

Recent Khalifa University graduates have completed the second session of a special program designed to teach them useful internship and work skills such as time management oral and written communications skills and team dynamics. The course which was offered through INJAZ UAE a member of Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide took place over four sessions at the University’s Abu Dhabi campus.

The program was delivered with the support of trained corporate volunteers one of whom was a Khalifa University alum and gave the students an opportunity to interact with real-life mentors and professionals while learning work skills that could be applied to their present or future employment opportunities.

Alumni speaker Abudullah Al Qassab said “I urge all Khalifa University alumni to give back and participate (in these events). Most of them have achieved high positions not only career wise but in their social life and artistic life. Some of them are artists some of them are professional Olympic athletes. They can inspire the new generations in many fields they don’t all have to be an engineer a programmer or a researcher and they can be more than one thing because we have more than one side to our personalities. Explore all those sides. They will only know this if you the alumni show them who you are and all that you have done that will be a true inspiration. You have only graduated a few years before them. You are showing them that during that short time they can be as awesome as you are or even more. Only if you come back and show them who you are.”

Recent graduate Lama Mahmoud said “The sessions offered a great set of information about self-confidence ethics and how to answer tough interview questions. (The speaker) pushed us to plan well and have a clear mind with respect to our future plans he also gave us real life examples and situations which made us able to link and justify the importance of his advice. He highlighted the importance of being honest ethical and professional and directed us to well written resumes and cover letters and encouraged us to modify our résumés accordingly.”

The course aimed to teach young alumni how to develop innovative personal strategies in order to achieve lifelong learning pursuits and career opportunities as well as identify and demonstrate work readiness skills needed to research get and keep a job. This was done by teaching a number of subjects including: emotional intelligence leadership time management oral and written communication problem solving team dynamics and coping with conflicts.

“I believe that that the alumni events is a step that shows that education for a better future goes beyond what is just in class. This step will give Khalifa University students a stronger advantage in the work field and it will give us a chance to develop further. This course definitely shed light on many aspects we might unintentionally miss.” Said recent graduate Rawdha Al Marrar.

KU Professor Wins NASA Galactic Cosmic Rays Challenge

Novel Shielding Idea Would Reduce Effects of Radiation on Space Travelers.

Dr. George Wesley Hitt Assistant Professor of Physics and Nuclear Engineering won top honors in NASA’s Galactic Cosmic Rays Challenge for his novel idea “on reusing a shield that could be placed in a Mars Transfer Orbit” to mitigate the impact of radiation on space travelers. NASA received a total of 136 global submission for the Challenge. Dr. Hitt received a cash award of $5 000 for his winning concept.

Dr. Hitt who obtained his PhD from Michigan State University in experimental nuclear physics proposed that shields become part of space infrastructure as opposed to the ship itself. “Shielding designs require something like 100 000 extra kilograms of payload to be shot up on a rocket and go with the astronauts. This is very expensive ” he explains. “It would be easier if the shielding was already up there. If you don’t have to make it part of the trip you can reuse it.”

NASA has issued a second challenge asking the public for ideas on optimal configurations of active and passive solutions to provide crew members maximum protection.
