Dr. Bayan Sharif Provost

Dr. Bayan Sharif was appointed as the Dean of the College of Engineering at Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) in 2012 and subsequently in 2017 as Dean of the College of Engineering at Khalifa University. In 2018, he was also appointed as Acting Provost. Dr. Sharif has an extensive background in the field of engineering with over 30 years of experience in an academic setting. He received his Bachelor and Doctorate degrees from Queen’s University of Belfast and Ulster University, N. Ireland, in 1984 and 1988, respectively. He then held a Research Fellowship at Queen’s University of Belfast before he was appointed as faculty at Newcastle University, UK in 1990, and was promoted to Full Professor in Digital Communications in 2000. Dr. Sharif received the prestigious award of Doctor of Science (DSc) in Engineering from Newcastle University in 2013 for his research thesis on Signal Processing and Optimization Algorithms for Acoustic and Radio Communications.

Prior to his appointment at Khalifa University, Dr. Sharif was the Head of the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at Newcastle University for 7 years. While in that post, he was also the Chair of the Board of Examiners, and Head of the Communications and Signal Processing Research Group (CSP). As Head of the CSP Group, he oversaw the establishment of a research lab dedicated to Sensors, Electromagnetics and Acoustics (SEALAB).

Dr. Sharif’s research interests are in digital communications with a focus on DSP algorithms for receiver structures and optimization of wireless networks. He has supervised more than 50 PhD students and published over 300 journal and conference papers, presented several tutorials and invited talks in acoustic and radio networks. He was also the Executive Chair of GLOBECOM 2018, the IEEE flagship conference, which was the first to be held in the region.
