Biography

Professor Said Salhi has been Emeritus Professor in Operational Research/Management Science at the Kent Business School (UK) since January 2021. Prior to his appointment as a Full Professor to Kent in 2005, he was at the University of Birmingham in the School of Mathematics for 15 years (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader) and in his later three years he acted as the Head of the Management Mathematics Group.

In Kent, he was also Head of the Management Science Group for over 8 years (2008-May 2017), founder and designer of the MSc in Logistics & Supply Chain Management, and founder of the Centre of Logistics and Heuristic Optimisation (CLHO) in 2008 which he was director till January 2021, https://research.kent.ac.uk/clho

He obtained his BSc in Mathematics with major in Operational Research & Statistics (University of Science and Technology, Algiers), MSc in Operational Research (Institute of Mathematics, Southampton) and PhD in Operational Research (School of Management, Lancaster).

Professor Salhi is currently Editor in Chief for the Journal of the Operational Research Society (JORS).

He  chaired the European Working Group in Location Analysis (EWGLA) in 1996, the  International Symposium in Combinatorial Optimisation (CO2016) in  September 2016, and  co-chaired the 61th British annual conference in Operational Research (OR61) in September 2019,  https://www.theorsociety.com/Pages/Conferences/OR61/OR61.aspx.

Professor Salhi has edited several special issues including ‘The Palgrave Handbook of Operations Research’ published in Summer 2023 ,   https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-96935-6?noAccess=true#page=683 , and authored a book on ‘Heuristic Search: The Emerging Science of Problem Solving” (2017) which can be found in: http://www.springer.com/gb/book/9783319493541.

He published over 130 papers in academic journals (excluding edited proceedings and book chapters). His H-index is 37 from Scopus and 53 from Google Scholar. His number of citations is over 5K in Scopus and in Google Scholar this number is over 10K. His research is on heuristic and mathematical optimization with applications to logistics and other areas of engineering. He is among the top 2% Ranking of Scientists in the World.

Professor Salhi has a rich and long experience in PhD supervision, and as first supervisor, he got 27 PhD students (14 in Birmingham and 13 in Kent). One of his PhD student was the winner of the 2017 UK ORS Doctorate award:  https://www.theorsociety.com/membership/awards-medals-and-scholarships/the-doctoral-award/previous-awards/#2017
