Professor Lowe holds BSc (Hons) (chemistry, 1993), DPhil (1997) and DSc (2009) degrees from the University of Sussex (UK). His DPhil was conducted under the supervision of Profs. Steven P. Armes FRS and Norman C. Billingham. In 1999 he moved to the Unversity of Southern Mississippi as a postdoctoral researcher, where he was subsequently appointed as an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry and then Associate Professor, with tenure, of Polymer Science. In 2009, he moved to the Department of Chemical Engineering as a Full Professor at the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), where he was affiliated with the Centre for Advanced Macromolecular Design. During his time at UNSW he was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship. In 2014, he moved to Perth as the Director of Curtin University's Nanochemistry Research Institute with an Underlying position as a Professor of Polymer Science. In August 2023, he joined Khalifa University as a Professor of Polymer Chemistry.
Professor Lowe's research interests broadly cover controlled polymer synthesis and modification, emphasising water-soluble and stimulus-responsive materials. The group has particular interests in applying RAFT, ROMP and Rh-mediated controlled insertion polymerisation techniques as polymer synthesis tools and applying thiol-X click chemistries for the synthesis and modification of new (co)polymers. Prof. Lowe has published >140 research papers; his work has been cited >21,000 times, and he has an associated h-index of 71 (source: Google Scholar). Prof. Lowe ranks in the top 0.2% of Stanford University's list of most-cited authors globally (2023).
We are actively recruiting highly motivated individuals interested in pursuing a PhD in polymer chemistry. If this is of interest, please visit the Kalifa University website for more information regarding the application and admission process (do not email Prof. Lowe directly).
