Industrial Hygienist Specialist

Khalifa University has two campuses in the city of Abu Dhabi – the KU Main Campus and the Sas Al Nakhl Campus, the latter housing two of KU’s flagship research institutes: Masdar Institute and Petroleum Institute.

The Industrial Hygienist Specialist is responsible for providing high-quality support to research laboratories. Duties include alleviating adverse working conditions that may cause illness or impair the health of workers, assessing all potential risks and hazards existing in research laboratories (including radiation, chemical, biological or psychosocial risks), establishing a safety plan with relevant stakeholders in agreement with KU EHS policies, coordination with KU EHS and lab users, and improvement of safety standard and their implementation in KU.

Operational Responsibilities

Laboratory Safety

• Drive practices and metrics, which ensure that the laboratories operate in compliance with all aspects of Khalifa University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies
• Support lab users to comply with KU EHS policies, improve safety standard, and follow safety-related processes
• Evaluate work conditions and operations to identify how they can affect the health of employees
• Conduct surveys to obtain information regarding certain health risks in a workplace
• Review operational procedures to identify processes detrimental to health
• Compile data and present report of findings to lab staff and faculty
• Design safety plans to eliminate or reduce risks of occupational hazards with the relevant stakeholders
• Certain operational changes and recommend strategies effective in minimizing exposure to health hazards
• Organize seminars for university staff to educate them on occupational safety and health
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all legislation (local, federal, and state) on occupational safety

Coordination

• Coordinate the maintenance and calibration of various safety monitoring equipment (toxic gas monitoring system, toxic gas detector) to ensure their operation
• Coordinate with other departments (EHS, Facility, Procurement) to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities related to the operations of the Research Labs department

Other Responsibilities

• Adhere to the University’s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
• Coordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed
• Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager 

Required Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in Science, Occupational Health Science-related field

Required Experience

• Expats: A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience
• UAE Nationals: A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
