Presenters: Dr. Athol Yates & Dr. Glenda El Gamal

  • Topic Title: Working with historic documents on the UAE: The World War 2 military base in Sharjah.

Dr. Athol Yates will showcases recently discovered archival documents on the World War 2 (1939-45) air force base in Sharjah. The first half of the talk will be about the documents, and the second half is a workshop extracting data to WW2-style aircraft silhouette poster of the aircraft which used the Sharjah base.

Dr. Athol Yates teaches on civil security, security technology, internal security, disaster management, public policy and research methods. His research focuses on the UAE public policy decision making, machinery of government, and UAE security structure and organizations. He has a particular interest in military, policing and intelligence history of the UAE.

 

Glenda El Gamal is a Senior Lecturer in the General Education Unit at Khalifa University. She has taught Technical and Academic Writing and Intercultural Communication for over 25 years. Prior to Ku, Glenda taught Master’s/Ph.D. students Academic Writing for Research at Masdar Institute and the University of Wollongong in Dubai.  Her current research and teaching focus is on bilingual education and education reform, academic writing for STEM and intercultural communication. She is also Research Coordinator for AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) and the Secretary for ALLT  (Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching Association) in the UAE.
