Research Areas

Researchers in the ISYE department use tools such as optimization, simulation, data mining, data analytics, lean production, six sigma, statistical quality control, and stochastics to address problems in the following thematic areas:

Supply Chain, Logistics and Transportation Systems

Designing and managing a supply chain involves data-intensive decisions such as the selection of suppliers, the location and capacity of warehouse and production facilities, modes of transportation, supporting information systems, as well as planning and management of all activities along the chain of supplies. Logistics is a part of the supply chain process that plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, and related information from the point-of-origin to the point-of-consumption in order to meet customers’ requirements.

Research activities in Supply Chain, Logistics and Transportation include:

  • Supplier selection, capacity planning and integrated inventory management.
  • Distribution network design, hub location, cross docking, warehousing and transportation.
  • Procurement planning of components and raw materials, assembly and distribution scheduling of customizable products in a build-to-order supply chain.
  • Establishing inventory replenishment policies to achieve material flow stability throughout the lean supply chain in prominent aerospace companies.
  • Blockchain in healthcare supply chains

Energy Economics, Policy, and Sustainability

The efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of urban critical infrastructure affect many aspects of society that include the cost of food and consumer goods, health and safety of citizens, availability and reliability of power systems, reliability and speed of telecommunications, and travel times. Critical infrastructures also affect the environment and consumption of natural resources.

Research activities in systems safety include:

  • Urban energy modeling
  • Carbon trading
  • Sustainable manufacturing
  • Optimal demand response bidding and pricing
  • Machine Learning algorithms and applications in investment
  • Resilient Design of System-of-Systems
  • Techno-Economic Assessment of Desalination technologies

Sustainable Built Environments

The built environment explores the way land use, growth patterns, and other built environment affect travel behavior, accounting for potential variation in estimated effects due to the spatial scale of analysis, analytical approach, and data used.

Research activities in the built environment include:

  • Quantifying the Impact of Human Actions on the Energy Performance of Kuwaiti Residential Buildings
  • Impact of social networks and demographics on energy conservation behaviors of building occupants
  • Analyzing the impact of different morphological parameters on the urban heat-island

Operations and Healthcare Management

Operations management focuses on the design and control of production or service processes to drive the efficiency of business operations. The operations function manages the entire production system from converting inputs into the final product or service.  While healthcare has benefited from numerous advances in diagnosis and treatment, innovative medical devices, and use of advanced technology, their processes are fraught with significant inefficiencies, errors and waste. Healthcare viewed as a system helps to address these concerns.

Research activities in systems safety include:

  • Development of mathematical models to characterize optimal pricing of warranty and service contracts; design of extended warranty contracts based on varying objectives
  • Performance-based logistics life cycle cost risk analysis
  • Optimal inspection and replacement policy
  • Designing lean patient flows in various types of clinics (Emergency, Outpatient, Inpatient) in a major hospital
  • Process engineering in healthcare provider systems

Occupational Health and Safety

Organizations use industrial engineers to assess the environment, health, and safety of the workplace taking into consideration systems safety, risk management, hazardous waste, noise, security and applicable regulations.

Research activities in health and safety include:

  • Evaluation of risk management practice in UAE hospitals
  • Anthropometric simulation of goods-to-man order picking strategies in distribution centers to determine health impact on workers
  • Predictive modeling to study disease spread and develop suitable intervention strategies
