Research Facilities

Research at Khalifa University takes place in several highly-specialized advanced laboratory facilities, such as:

  • Radio Frequency Measurements Lab 

The Radio Frequency (RF) Measurements Laboratory is used to facilitate the delivery of advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of RF/Antennas/Microwaves/Radars/Electromagnetics. It is focused on providing students with practical training on specialized topics in these areas.

 

  • Real Time and Artificial Intelligence Energy Lab

This research lab is fully equipped with power system simulators that can be used for power system analysis, power system protection, power system stability, and power system control. In addition, the lab includes several real time digital simulators RTDS, OPAL-RT and the MMCs modules for developing advanced research on Hybrid AC/DC Power Grid with renewable energy and energy storage systems integration. 

 

  • High Voltage and Dielectric Materials Lab

The high voltage and dielectric materials research laboratory at Khalifa University (KU) has been founded to build expertise and research capability to address the challenges and technical problems in power system network. Vital equipment (Transformer, cable, Bushing, lightning arrester, Circuit breaker) in power network operate under increasingly challenging conditions, with the requirement to provide a reliable power supply at high efficiency to a wide variety of industrial, commercial and domestic loads. 

 

  • Power Electronics and Sustainable Energy Research Lab

Power Electronics and Sustainable Energy (PEASE) Research Lab is conducting research in the broad area of power electronics. Current research is focused on electric vehicles, wireless charging, multilevel converters for medium voltage applications, low and high power electric drives, HVDC transmission, grid integration of renewable energy sources, Wide band gap device based converter systems etc.  

 

  • Energy Systems and Control Optimization Lab

Energy Systems and Control Optimization (ESCO) Lab is a state of the art facility conducting research in the field of power systems. ESCO lab is striving to modernize the UAE’s power infrastructure by developing technologies to utilize the potential of vast natural and sustainable resources endemic to the country which is conventionally relied on oil. 

 

  • Power and Energy Conversion Lab

Focuses on design and development of cutting-edge converter systems for various applications, such as, power quality improvement, microgrids (DC and AC), drives, PV and wind energy conversion systems, electric vehicles, CubeSats and Satellite EPS, and solid-state transformer. 

 

  • Smart Sensing Lab 

The smart sensing lab is multidisciplinary powerhouse of scientific and engineering innovation within Khalifa University. This testing facility supports research in Radio Frequency (RF) sensing, Radars, subsurface imaging, nondestructive testing, structural heath monitoring, microwave & millimeter wave systems, and antennas

 

  • Optoelectronics Characterization Lab 

This lab enables the optical and electrical (up to 100 GHz RF capabilities) of various electronic and photonics devices and systems, such as photonic integrated chips, RF microchips and microsystems, Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS),  optical fiber devices, solar cells, electronic and photonics sensors. 

 

  • Smart Operation Research Lab 

The Smart Operation Lab pioneers cutting-edge research in operations research, computational science and artificial intelligence, dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation. 

 

  • RF and Mixed Signal Lab 

Supports work and measurement activities in radio frequency (RF), antennas and communication systems. The equipment includes Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs), spectrum and signal analyzers, signal generators, NI USRP, etc.
