Research Centers

Khalifa University of Science and Technology is home to the UAE’s leading research institutes and centers, where challenges of relevance to the region and world are addressed in a systematic and targeted manner by innovative researchers working together in world-class facilities. These centers create the foundation for the university to become a regional and global leader in research.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology Research Centers have the following characteristics:

  • Large‐scale research units established to address strategic university research priorities
  • Theme- or mission-oriented to address medium-term strategic priorities
  • May be sponsored by industry and/or government partners to address their priorities for a defined period of time
  • Led by prominent scholars primarily appointed as faculty members

Faculty from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are involved in research conducted through the following centers:

EBTIC
EBTIC aims to advance intelligent systems technologies for the Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and NGN-enabled ICT applications and services, in order to put in place, the support infrastructure to facilitate, develop and enable the Digital Networked Economy in the UAE and beyond. Read more

Research Centre on Cyber-Physical Systems (C2PS)

The emergence of the Internet-of-Everything (IoE), a digital eco-system composed of billions of cyber-physical objects, is not just a technological innovation but a singularity that has radically and forever changed the way human beings live and work.  Developing research in this field is a crucial part of the UAE strategy and of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.

The KU Research Centre on Cyber-Physical Systems (C2PS) deals with transformative ICT technologies like micro-devices, cloud/edge computing, cyber-security and mobile communications, and with emergent disruptive innovations such as IoE, Deep Learning, and Block-chain.

C2PS mission is threefold: (i) performing internationally recognized research in all technological areas underlying Cyber-Physical Systems (ii) supporting technological innovation required by UAE stakeholders in the fields of transportation, logistics, healthcare and manufacturing and (iii) streamlining research results to create new business opportunities and make existing businesses more efficient and profitable.

C2PS activity revolves around five Themes that converge to support and enable IoE applications: Computation architectures, Networks and Communication, Hardware and Micro-Devices, Big Data Analytics/Artificial Intelligence and Security, Trust, and Privacy.  These five Themes contribute to a common research purpose: managing complex digital applications whose dimensions, variability and volume defy traditional approaches. Read more

Khalifa Semiconductor Research Center
Khalifa Semiconductor Research Center (KSRC) is a world-class multidisciplinary research center based at Khalifa University’s Abu Dhabi campus. Established in 2011, the center is one way that Khalifa University is working to the Abu Dhabi government’s 2030 strategic vision to invest heavily in areas such as semiconductor technology, biomedical engineering, aerospace, and nuclear technologies.

Khalifa University Robotics Institute
The Khalifa University Robotics Institute (KURI) is dedicated to establishing an internationally recognized center of excellence in Robotics research, focusing on three broad areas of robotic vehicles, manufacturing automation and biorobotics, with applications in safety and security, manufacturing and healthcare industrial sectors.

Information Security Research Center

The research focus of the Information Security Research Center (ISRC) at Khalifa University is on innovative techniques, protocols and systems for identifying Cyber Security threats, assessing risks, protecting information and communication infrastructures form attacks, guaranteeing confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, accountability, as well as on validating security policies via audit and forensics.

ISRC research capabilities cover all key area of Cyber Security, including wireless and mobile security, Cloud and Big Data security, Security of Cyber-Physical Systems, IoT and SCADA security, audit, penetration testing, digital forensics, etc. ISRC contributes to Khalifa University’s strategic research area of ICT and Security and supports other areas in terms of applications. It has a strong outreach and cooperates with several national and international research, business and government entities.

ATIC SRC Center of Excellence for Energy Efficient Electronic Systems (ACE4S)

The Center of Excellence on RF/5G Communications was established to develop transceivers equipped with integrated circuits embedded with hundreds of antennas capable of high-speed data transfer at the bandwidth frequencies being opened up for 5G networks. This includes the 28 GHz, 38 GHz and 73-76 GHz radio frequency bands. A key goal of the center is to increase the number of multiple input and output (MIMO) antennas on transceivers, and develop solutions for increased throughput and low latency. Design of the transceivers will be performed at Masdar Institute, while fabrication will take place at GLOBALFOUNDRIES. The center established by MI in late 2016 through a partnership between the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and GLOBALFOUNDRIES — a Mubadala-owned full-service semiconductor design, development, fabrication and innovation company.

Center of Excellence on Integrated Photonics

The Center of Excellence for Integrated Photonics was established to develop advanced silicon photonics components needed to support the transfer of massive amounts of data within data centers with high energy-efficiency and at a low cost. The ultimate goal of the center is to improve the energy efficiency and speed of data transmission within data centers by advancing photonics-electronics integrated systems so that the people, cars, devices, and cities that rely on that data will be able to access it instantly. Design of the photonics components will be performed at Khalifa University of Science and Technology, while fabrication will take place at GLOBALFOUNDRIES — a Mubadala-owned full-service semiconductor design, development, fabrication and innovation company. The center was established by MI in late 2016 through a partnership between the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and GLOBALFOUNDRIES.
