Students Showcased 3 Innovative Mobile Apps and One Site Inspection Drone.

Khalifa University participated in the 6th Abu Dhabi e-Government Forum with a showcase of 3 innovative mobile apps and one site inspection drone created by graduate and undergraduate students. The Forum which took place on Tuesday today June 9 at the St. Regis Hotel Abu Dhabi aims to highlight the achievements of Abu Dhabi’s e-government and Khalifa University’s presentation demonstrated the University’s focus on developing technology that benefits both citizens and government entities alike and its support of e-government.

Project on Display at Abu Dhabi e-Government Summit 2015

The apps on display will be the AirBook: Augmented Immersive Reality Book which aims to enrich learning materials by adding augmented reality visuals and audio to printed books. This is done by using the camera of a smart phone to scan the book and when it detects a pre-restored pattern it will play the associated media. This app recently won the 2015 Mobile Application Contest held in April.

Another app is called “Blind Eye” which aims to assist disabled people in their homes in case of an emergency. The disabled person can use Google glasses in order to give emergency services a live view of the situation they are in. The app can be initiated via touch or voice command. Based on what emergency services sees help can be sent immediately or they can tell the person what to do in order to get out of danger.

The third app on display is called Amanah and it is a complete system that allows parents and schools to keep track of students entering and leaving school buses thus ensuring the safety of children and preventing them from being left behind. Each student is given a tag that is read when the student passes through the bus door. Data such as the student entering or leaving the bus GPS and Beacons are used to identify if the student is on bus school or home. Parents have access to their child’s records via a cross platform mobile app which displays their child’s location and the time.

Khalifa University also displayed a Site Inspection Drone which was one of five to recently make it to the finals in the “Drones for Good” Competition in the national category. Among its many capabilities the site-inspection drone can help enforce regulations at labor camps – from ensuring that employees are taking appointed break times to monitoring hours of operation and building boundaries. The drone also can conduct post-construction inspections thanks to a live internet feed capacity that provides three-dimensional imagery of building sites.

“We are always eager to showcase our students’ capabilities especially when their projects are aimed at benefitting all of the society and the government of the UAE ” said Dr. Arif Al Hammadi Executive Vice President of Khalifa University. “The projects we display serve the needs our students observed be it more reliable monitoring of buses and children or the need for government agencies to keep a closer watch on construction projects to ensure that laws are being adhered to. Our students are keen to give back to a country that’s given them so much and the way they can do that is through innovation.”
