36 students Come to Khalifa University Campus to Jump Start Future Science and Technology Careers

Under the patronage of His Excellency Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi UAE’s Minister of Education Khalifa University and the Etisalat-BT Innovation Center (EBTIC) kicked off an exciting “Bootcamp” for young innovators today. Thirty Six Emirati school students are participating in the three-day event April 5 to 7 at Khalifa University’s Abu Dhabi campus. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp provides participants who are interested in science and technology careers with essential information about the innovation process business development commercialisation skills entrepreneurship and intellectual property issues.

Day one of the Bootcamp included a pep talk from Ahmed Al Mazrui AM Industry Director UAE Inventor to inspire the students while day two will feature Donald McDonnell coming from Duke University in the US and Omar Almahmoud Acting CEO of the ICT Fund.

Dr.Mohamed Al Mualla“We are delighted to host these talented young students at Khalifa University through this first Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp ” said Dr. Mohammed Al Mualla EBTIC’s Board Member and Khalifa University’s Senior Vice President for Research and Development. “This is invaluable information if today’s youths are going to make Abu Dhabi’s 2030 Vision and the UAE National Innovation Strategy of a sustainable knowledge economy reality. We are eager to help cultivate the young talent in the UAE and to help enhance their skills in addition to promoting creativity and innovation. This is very timely as the UAE announced 2015 as the year of innovation. It also fits well with the Innovation in Education initiatives recently launched in the Government Summit.”

Prof Nader AzarmiProf. Nader Azarmi Director of EBTIC and a senior manager in BT Research and Innovation department said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Khalifa University to bring the experience of BT to this first Innovation and Entrepreneurship bootcamp in the UAE. The initiative will help to bridge the gap between the worlds of education and business and to mentor the next generation of young innovators and entrepreneurs. Bridging this gap is critical challenge to any country wanting to be a competitive player with an innovative knowledge-based economy. Our objective is to create valuable opportunities for young talents to enhance their skills and promote creativity and innovation in the UAE and beyond.”

Promising school students were chosen to attend the Bootcamp from a cadre of high-achieving Emirati youths with an interest in invention science and technology. Bootcamp is teaching them how to turn fledgling ideas into viable propositions. The students are immersed in lectures workshops and hands-on learning experiences in addition to having the opportunity to meet with Khalifa University’s and EBTIC’s own team of researchers innovators and scientists.

The Bootcamp program is based on the experience of BT in Ireland where it has been running a similar program successfully as the BT Business Bootcamp for the past six years.

The Bootcamp is being conducted in collaboration with Khalifa University BT and the University College of Dublin (UCD Dublin) and with educational partnership from the UAE Ministry of Education the Abu Dhabi Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET) Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) Applied Technical High Schools (ATHS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) UAE section. The event also boasts several notable sponsors including the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development and ICT Fund who are platinum sponsors gold sponsors Emirates Advanced Investments and the Advanced Military Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Center (AMMROC) and silver sponsor Yahsat.

“In this event we share the views and objectives of Khalifa University and EBTIC on the importance of empowering the UAE’s human and knowledge capital in the fields of creativity and innovation for the ICT sector which nowadays acts as a compass that determines the power and progress of nations and societies across the world.
