Abstract

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which have high theoretical energy density, are the promising next-generation batteries. However, their practical use is hindered by several problems, including the low electronic conductivity of sulfur, the dissolution and shuttling of dissolved lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in the electrolyte and the dendrite growth of lithium metal anode, which lead to the low utilization of sulfur and the fast capacity decay. Carbon materials are indispensable as sulfur hosts in the cathode because of their abundant porosity and controllable surface chemical properties to prevent LiPS shuttling and improve sulfur utilization. The key issue is achieving high sulfur loading while maintaining high sulfur utilization. We propose assembling the graphene to prepare the carbon-based host with large pores to ensure high sulfur loading. In addition, to introduce the other two-dimensional materials, such as MXenes, with catalysis activity, high sulfur utilization is achieved at the same time.
