President’s Memo │ March 2022│ Issue 65

April 19, 2022

Dear KU Community,

Ramadan Kareem! I hope you are having a wonderful and inspiring Ramadan.

I am delighted to share a number of university achievements and accomplishments with you all this month.

We launched another mini-satellite into space! The Light-1 CubeSat, a collaboration initiative of the UAE Space Agency, Bahrain’s National Space Science Agency, Khalifa University and NYU Abu Dhabi, was successfully launched into orbit from the International Space Station.

We celebrated a large number of faculty recognitions, including Dr. Vinod Khadkikar, who has been named IEEE Fellow; Dr. Heba Abunahla, who has been invited to serve as guest editor in Frontiers of Neuroscience; Dr. Fateh Bouchaala, whose paper at the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE) Annual Conference received the highest ratings; Dr. Nirpendra Singh, who has been appointed as an Early Career Advisory Board Member of Materials Today Physics Journal; Dr. Giovanni Palmisano, who has been extended in his post as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering (JECE); Dr. Ehab Fahmy, El-Sadaany who has been appointed by the Emirates Scientists Council to fill out new roles in the organization; Dr. Ernesto Damiani, who has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the journal IEEE Transactions on Services Computing; and Dr. Ali AlHammadi and Dr. Yasmin Halawani, who were among the top 15 innovators recognized on the MIT Technology Review List of the 2021 Innovators under 35 MENA edition.

We’re also proud of our prolific faculty and researchers who have published books recently, including Dr. Giovanni Palmisano, Dr. Fawzi Banat, Dr. Hanifa Taher Alblooshi, and Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad,

In the way of student achievements, we recently celebrated six KU students winning Gold and Bronze medals at the EmiratesSkills competition, and saw a number of students participate in an entrepreneurship bootcamp competition.

At KU, we are committed to innovation and growth, which is why we continuously work to increase our involvement with institutional and academic collaborations that will support us in our goals to advance research and knowledge and nurture the country’s human capital.

For this reason, we announced a partnership with the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) / University of Leuven (Belgium), to initiate a Biomedical Science Discovery (BISDI) program. The collaboration is a first in the mutual relationship between the UAE and Belgium and a milestone for future collaborations in joint biomedical research and drug development.

We also announced that KU will be hosting the International Society for Porous Media (InterPore) 2022 Conference at our Main campus from 30 May – 2 June, bringing together renowned global researchers in a wide range of porous media research.

And we successfully organized the 2022 Graduate Student Research Conference (GSRC), which featured over 400 oral and poster presentations; as well as the University’s first cycling competition, the KU Century Challenge, where 500 riders from across the UAE biked a distance of 185km from KU’s Main Campus to the Jebel Hafeet Mountain in Al Ain.
