President’s Memo │ December 2021│ Issue 62

January 12, 2022

Dear KU Community,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year! 2021 was a difficult year for many people. And yet, over the past 12 months, the students, faculty and staff at Khalifa University remained dedicated to learning, educating, and advancing knowledge to help find solutions to the world’s greatest challenges, including solutions to help fight this pandemic.

I am grateful to you all for working together to ensure a Covid-safe campus, while continuing to learn and teach, whether in-person or remotely, and sustaining KU’s mission to produce valuable research and world leaders who will benefit the UAE and entire world.

To further boost our efforts to transform our outstanding research into beneficial and commercially available innovations, last month we launched the Khalifa University Enterprise Company, which will encourage technology investors and entrepreneurs to partner with KU to commercialize our growing patent and technology portfolio.

My sincere congratulations to Research Associate Abhijith Suboyin and his team who won the Best Cohort in the Agribusiness category and Top Cohort Winner at Climathon 2021; Dr. Jiju Antony, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, who won the Institute of Six Sigma Professionals (ISSP) Best Project Awards 2021 in the category “Significant Contribution to the field of Lean Six Sigma”;  and Dr. Jorge P. Zubelli, Professor and Chair of the Mathematics Department, who recently chaired the 16th annual Research in Options: RiO 2021 conference.

My heartfelt congratulations also to a team of students who won 3rd place at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) UAE 2021; a team of four Electrical Engineering and Computer Science senior students who won 2nd place at the 15th IEEE UAE Student Day 2021 competition in the category “Senior Design Project – Power and Renewable Energy”; and two student teams who competed against more than 495 universities in the  Bloomberg Trading Challenge.

I also offer my congratulations to several faculty members who have published papers in research journals and leading international conferences during the past month. Keep up the good work!
