June 27, 2022

Dear Community,

We offer our deepest and heartfelt condolences to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, on the sad demise of Late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose name our university is honored to have. We join the country’s leadership, the people of the UAE and the global community, in sharing our grief at this moment of sadness. This is indeed a great loss for the country and the people of the UAE. We will always be grateful to him for his special involvement and support to our university. We pray to the Almighty to grant him eternal peace!

And the Khalifa University community also mourns our faculty Dr. Nenad Mladenovic, Professor, Industrial and Systems Engineering. He was ranked #2 scientist in the UAE and was also an internationally accomplished researcher and academician, especially renowned for his contribution to the creation of the well-known optimization and AI method called ‘Variable Neighborhood Search’. We express our sincere condolences to his family members, friends, faculty colleagues and students.

Among faculty achievers, we offer our congratulations to Dr. Jiju Antony for receiving the prestigious Crosby Medal by the American Society for Quality (ASQ), Dr. Yacine Addad for his appointment to the Editorial Board of the Journal Nuclear Engineering and Design, Dr. Lourdes F. Vega for becoming a new fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and Dr. Mohamed Shawky El Moursi for being recognized by the IEEE as one of its 2021 Outstanding Associate Editors.

We also commend Dr. Deepak Puthal for being honored by the IEEE Smart Computing Special Technical Community (SCSTC) with the Early Career Award, and Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Hans Huybrighs for being recognized as a European Space Agency (ESA) Champion. Our congratulations also to Dr. Vinod Khadkikar on his appointment as one of IEEE Industry Applications Society’s Distinguished Lecturers for 2022-2023, and Dr. Ibrar Yaqoob for his appointment to two editorial boards – the IEEE Network Journal and Elsevier’s Future Generation Computer Systems Journal as a technical editor.

We would also like to congratulate our students who have made a mark and won in different international and local competitions. Keep up the good work!
