Khalifa University Professor of Electrical Engineering Prof. Raed Shubair has been pursuing his research this summer from the grounds of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge Massachusetts USA following his official appointment as “Visiting Scientist” which began in June 2015.

Khalifa University Professor Takes on Research Appointment at MITProf. Shubair has been actively engaged in pursuing joint research collaborations and projects with MIT professors and researchers on applications of real need in our daily life. For example two of his projects at MIT have focused on the development of new wearable sensors for monitoring heart and diabetic patients as well as the design of novel antennas for early detection of breast and brain cancer. The research teams working on these projects include researchers with diverse technical backgrounds in engineering and biology and involves collaboration between MIT and Harvard Medical School.

In addition to his research activities within MIT campus Prof. Shubair gave a number of technical seminars in various part of USA and Canada over the summer. He spoke to students and professors at MIT and at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory as well as at the Ohio State University and at the University of Texas at Dallas. He also spoke at a major technical conference in Vancouver Canada.

“I have been enjoying quality productive time in MIT’s vibrant and dynamic research environment ” said Prof. Shubair. “Through this appointment I have had the opportunity to spread the name of Khalifa University and to show people here that scientific innovation knows no borders. The ability to interact with prominent professors and top researchers at MIT and engage with them in daily technical discussions at a competitive intellectual level has had a tremendous positive impression on my work. My appointment at MIT has been a major milestone in my academic career and an ultimate reward for my dedicated efforts and hard work with my students over my many years at Khalifa University.”

This is not the first time Prof. Shubair who joined Khalifa University in 1993 has been recognized for his innovative work. In July 2015 the largest professional engineering organization Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Antennas and Propagation (AP) Society announced the appointment of Prof. Shubair as the IEEE AP Society Coordinator for Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region. This recognition has come after Prof. Shubair’s active role within the international academic and professional engineering community over the past 25 years. As part of this appointment Prof. Shubair will be responsible for coordinating activities carried out by IEEE AP Society chapters in all the countries within the MENA region such as “IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program.” At the same time Prof. Shubair was appointed a member of IEEE AP Society Education Committee. He will be responsible along with other international experts for the development and implementation of the “IEEE Global EM Education Initiative.”

“We are very pleased with all the hard work and dedication Prof. Shubair has shown to Khalifa University and to the engineering profession ” said Khalifa University President Prof. Tod Laursen. “Khalifa University strives to world-class faculty from around the world and Prof. Shubair well-deserved appointment at MIT and the recent leading roles assigned to him by IEEE show that we are doing just that. It is also indicative of the types of experiences we aim to help our faculty secure at quality institutions around the world through research leaves conference travel programs and the like. Our faculty bring back collaborations and experiences from this type of appointment that really benefit our students over the long run. Raed has consistently demonstrated his commitment and dedication to sharing his knowledge and experiences with Khalifa University students and I have no doubt his work at MIT will benefit them in the future also.”
