Experts from around the world discuessed advances in nuclear safeguards security and safety.
Khalifa University held the fifth annual Gulf Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Institute (GNEII) Symposium at the Abu Dh
abi Campus April 20-21 2014. The symposium brought together nuclear energy experts from around the world to discuss issues of nuclear safety security and safeguards and to hear presentations by GNEII fellows. A graduation ceremony was held on the last day.
GNEII fellows from the Federal Authority of Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA) in the UAE underwent more than 400 hours of training as part of the course. Instructors came from Khalifa University Texas A&M University Sandia National Laboratories and the World Institute for Nuclear Security.
The keynote speaker for the event was Al Sharif Nasser bin Nasser Managing Director of the Middle East Scientific Institute for Security based in Amman Jordan. His work focuses on addressing chemical biological radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks across the region. He spoke to the audience about regional perspectives on nuclear security.
The fellows presented Capstone projects ranging from “Evaluation of Threats by Drones to a Nuclear Power Plant ” to “Investigations on the Sensitivity of UAE Domestic Agricultural Production to Radiological Contamination.” Other topics included “Operational Security and Information Protection in the Areas of 3S” and “Analysis of the Safeguards Measures for the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Back-End Options in the UAE.”
GNEII is the result of a partnership between Khalifa University Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) and Texas A&M University’s Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute (NSSPI). The program provides nuclear energy leaders with an enhanced understanding of the safety safeguards and security.
