Submissions Staff

The following is a list of the staff at the CCL who will work on your samples and assist you with any queries you have on your data or structure. Since each structure has a unique reference number and different individuals are working on them, please use the CCL e-mail for all communications regarding your sample: ccl@ku.ac.ae.

Dr. Sharmarke Mohamed
Dr. Sharmarke Mohamed Associate Professor, Department of chemistry

Research Group Website www.smohamed.org

Dr. Sharmarke Mohamed is a member of the faculty at KU’s Chemistry Department and PI of the Green Chemistry & Materials Modelling Laboratory. He is a small molecule crystallographer and computational chemist by training. Dr. Mohamed received his training in chemical crystallography and computational modelling under the joint supervision of Prof. Sally Price FRS and Prof. Derek Tocher at UCL, where he completed both his MSci and PhD degrees. Dr. Mohamed has also worked in the pharmaceutical industry on solid from development. His work at Sanofi’s generics business led to the award of 3 solid from patents. At KU, Dr. Mohamed has played a critical role in the establishment of the CCL. More broadly in the UAE, Dr. Mohamed has also played an active part in the development of the Emirates Crystallographic Society (ECS), currently serving as its founding Vice President. In his capacity as Vice President of the ECS, Dr. Mohamed has played a leading role in the membership of the ECS in international organizations such as the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), European Crystallographic Association (ECA) and the Asian Crystallographic Association (AsCA). The ECS is now a member of all three international organizations and this effort brings better resources for crystallographic and materials research in the UAE. At the CCL, Dr. Mohamed is in charge of the operations of the lab and works closely with CCL staff, internal/external collaborators, KU Research Laboratories Department and KU Leadership.

Dr. Praveen Managutti
Dr. Praveen Managutti Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of chemistry

Dr. Praveen Managutti is a postdoctoral fellow at Khalifa University, chemistry department, with Prof. Gareth Price and Ass. Prof. Sharmarke Mohamed. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Material science from INSA, Rennes, supported by a fellowship from the French ministry of higher education. At the CCL, Dr. Praveen is responsible for single crystal data collection, analysis, maintenance, and training the users of this facility.

Dr. Thomas Delclos
Dr. Thomas Delclos Manager, Surface and Material Characterization Core Lab
Tel +971 2 312 4340

Dr Delclos arrived in KU in 2019 to manage their Surface and Material Characterization laboratory (Core Lab), including XRD and SC-XRD. His scientific background is in Multiscale Characterization of materials. He obtained his PhD in Materials Science and his Master degree in Polymer Science from University of Bordeaux.

He uses his broad experience in materials characterization to provide training and insight on the different tools available in the Lab.

Tharalekshmy Anjana
Tharalekshmy Anjana CORE Lab Specialist, Surface and Material Characterization Core Lab
Tel +971 2 312 3462

Anjana is a Core Lab Specialist at the Surface and Materials Characterization Core Lab under the KU Research Laboratories department. She holds a master’s degree in Physics and has extensive experience in materials characterization employing diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. She provides user training and support on the lab equipment to KU students and researchers.

Prof. John Derek Woollins
Prof. John Derek Woollins External advisor to the CCL

Professor Derek Woollins is known for his work on the synthesis, determination of structure and applications of new molecules made with main group elements of the Periodic Table. Prof. Woollins’ work on phosphorus-sulfur and phosphorus-selenium chemistry resulted in Woollins' reagent that has been manufactured on a commercial scale for use in organic synthesis.

Prof. Woollins is currently an external advisor to the CCL and is supporting the CCL with training and operational matters.

Prof Alexandra Slawin
Prof Alexandra Slawin External advisor to the CCL

Prof. Slawin’s research is primarily concerned with the determination of the 3-D structures of molecules and materials and the relationship between these structures and properties. Prof. Slawin studied at Imperial College. In 1999 she moved to St Andrews where she was promoted to Professor in 2002 – the first female chemistry professor in St Andrews. She has published over 1500 research papers and has over 3500 structures in the CCDC.

Prof. Slawin is currently an external advisor to the CCL and is supporting the CCL with training and operational matters.
