After a Decade at Khalifa University: Why Our Students Continue to Inspire Me

July 6, 2026

This year’s graduation ceremony was unlike any I have attended before. As I watched several of my former undergraduate students cross the stage to receive their PhDs, I realized I had witnessed almost their entire academic journey. I still remember meeting them when they first arrived at Khalifa University. Over the years, I watched them grow from curious undergraduate students into accomplished researchers. Seeing them graduate with doctoral degrees was a rare privilege and one of the most rewarding moments of my academic career.

The occasion was particularly meaningful because it also marked nearly ten years of my own journey at Khalifa University. Looking back, I found myself reflecting not only on how much our students had grown, but also on how much the University itself had evolved during that time.

As educators, we often become part of only one chapter in a student’s story. Occasionally, however, we are fortunate enough to witness almost the entire journey. Watching students mature intellectually, overcome challenges, and develop into confident researchers is one of the greatest rewards of academic life. Looking around the graduation hall, I could see that many of my colleagues shared the same sense of pride.

The celebrations became even more special when we learned that Khalifa University had entered the top 150 universities in the QS World University Rankings, becoming the first university in the UAE to achieve this milestone. While it was an important institutional achievement, it also served as a reminder that the success of any university is ultimately reflected in the success of its people. Every graduate crossing the stage represented years of dedication, mentorship, collaboration, and discovery.

During my time at Khalifa University, I have had the privilege of teaching, mentoring, and learning from hundreds of students. Many have gone on to become researchers, engineers, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders in their respective fields.

People sometimes ask me what gives me optimism about the future. My answer has remained the same: our students. Research priorities evolve, technologies advance, and industries transform, but the curiosity, resilience, and determination of our students continue to inspire confidence.

I remember conversations with students, moments of discovery, and the satisfaction of seeing potential become achievement. Those experiences have shaped my own journey as much as I hope I have contributed to theirs.

To our newest graduates, congratulations. Your achievements reflect years of dedication, perseverance, and hard work. Wherever your journey takes you next, I hope you continue to ask questions, embrace new challenges, and use your knowledge to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

As I left this year’s graduation ceremony, I felt something that is sometimes in short supply in today’s world: genuine optimism. After spending nearly a decade watching students learn, grow, and exceed expectations, it is difficult not to feel hopeful about the future. If this year’s graduates are any indication of what lies ahead, then the renewable energy of the future is already here, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed part of that journey.
