- Achievements and Publications
Although a relatively new center, KU 6GRC has reported several notable achievements in research and innovation. One of the early highlights is the development of “TelecomGPT”, a framework for building large language models tailored to telecommunications applications. Alongside this, the center launched the Open Telecom LLM Leaderboard on the Hugging Face platform – the first open benchmarking leaderboard for telecom-specific AI models – in partnership with the GSMA industry association and Huawei. This initiative positions the center at the forefront of applying generative AI to 6G networking problems.
KU 6GRC has also produced high-profile white papers that outline 6G technology directions. In 2023, the center led the publication of “Next-Generation Connectivity in the UAE: 6G”, a white paper discussing 6G prospects and roadmaps in the UAE. Another major publication is the white paper “Large-Scale AI in Telecom: Charting the Roadmap for Innovation, Scalability, and Enhanced Digital Experiences”, which was led by Khalifa University under the IEEE Communications Society’s GenAINet initiative on emerging technologies. These documents have contributed to national and international discourse on 6G, providing insights for policymakers and industry (the UAE’s telecom regulator TDRA collaborated on the 6G white paper).
Additionally, the center plays a key role in prestigious research initiatives. KU 6GRC was involved in the “Large Generative AI Models in Telecom (GenAI-Net)” emerging technology initiative by IEEE ComSoc, with Prof. Mérouane Debbah serving as General Chair. Through GenAI-Net, the center helped organize workshops and special journal issues on AI for telecom, further establishing its leadership in the intersection of machine learning and wireless communications.
