Sensors and Instrumentation

Dealing with the development of novel systems covering a wide range of topics including earth observation using different sensor technologies and on-board sensors (e.g., attitude determination, space situational awareness, etc.). The scope of this theme encompasses a wide ranges of sensor systems corresponding to earth observation (active and passive sensing optical, infrared and microwave frequencies), attitude sensing (magnetic field sensors, acceleration sensors and imaging sensors such as star trackers, sun sensors, horizon sensors, etc.), sensing of space weather (radiation sensors, space situational awareness sensors, etc.), and sensing of safety parameters of the satellite components (temperature, voltage, current, deformation, etc.).

Command & Data Handling Systems

Dealing with all aspects of computing in the space missions. The theme will also explore various aspects of effects of radiation on computing hardware and aim to develop space-qualified hardware. The second aspect of the theme is the development of the software frameworks enabling easier updates on ground and in orbit with embedded self-validation strategies.

Satellite Communications

Dealing with implementation and development of systems for communication with spacecraft. The theme includes aspects of front and back ends both at the ground segment and the spacecraft. The Centre is expected to work on advanced communication systems through development of novel technologies, such as novel antenna configurations, high data rate architectures, highly efficient radios, and cover topics, such as laser communications, next generation ground stations and modems, satellite networks, next generation modulation and cryptography, and wide band components.

Space Robotics

Dealing with a broad range of topics on the development of autonomous systems onboard the spacecraft and novel robotic systems for achieving advanced space missions. The key focus is the development of robotic systems that are capable of withstanding the harsh space environment and working on diverse tasks such as exploration, assembly, construction, maintenance, maneuvering complex terrains, etc. Topics include, control systems, electromechanical design, machine vision under complex imaging environments, command and control interfaces with teleoperation modes, energy efficient systems, astronaut support systems, thermally efficient designs, etc.

Space Power and Energy Storage

Dealing with the generation, storage and distribution of power in the spacecraft. The key focus is on the development of novel energy storage systems that are highly efficient and capable of withstanding the harsh space environment.

Other topics include development of novel solar technologies for space applications and efficient power distribution systems utilizing state of the art technologies.

Mechanical Systems

Dealing with aspects of mechanical design and manufacturing of space components with structural and thermal considerations to withstand the launch and space environments.

Spacecraft Dynamics and Control

Dealing with theoretical and practical aspects of development of attitude control systems. The key focus is on development of novel frameworks for spacecraft attitude control.

Space Mission Analysis and Design

Dealing with aspects of orbital analysis, development of concepts of operations for future missions, developing studies in support of the future exploration missions, etc.
