Data Analytics and Applied Artificial Intelligence
The lab is equipped with several technologies to respond to two of the major challenges of Industry 4.0, specifically, the exponential growth in the size of ambient data and the need to ultimately shift from Assisted to Autonomous Intelligence paradigms. The vision of this facility is to provide a holistic vision of AI over IoE/CPS, integrating design and deployment of data processing and AI analytics. Ultimately, our research aims to provide a transparent understanding of the complete data pipeline. This will facilitate human decision makers in gaining trust in the outcomes of AI systems, and improving human ability in selecting AI models, depending on the task at hand.
Some of the noteworthy equipment/services under this facility are:
- Edge processors (multi-blade devices) with on-board storage, with operating system and local hypervisor
- Access to public and private cloud computing services: Software development, testing and deployment tools at the application level
Cyber-Security and Privacy
Many emerging threats target AI systems and the human-system interface within CPS. The objective of the Cyber Security facility is to provide post-graduates and researchers with state-of-the-art tools and systems to establish trust relations among IoT devices, edge processors, cloud-based applications and the other components of the CPS ecosystem. It also offers the opportunity to run experiments in a well configured and isolated environment.
In our lab, advanced tools are used to develop an EEG identification system that consists of a hardware implementation of the EEG authentication and identification algorithms. Such system can be used to collect data from EEG sensors, process it and meet the real-time response constraint by using appropriate deep learning techniques to detect the insider attacks in CPSs.
Some of the noteworthy equipment under this facility are:
- Vital Signs readers
- Isolated workstations
- Blades with on-board storage
Mobile Networks and 5G
Researchers working under this facility aim to develop highly intelligent communication nodes with high level of independence that make such entities truly autonomous. Experiments are being carried out to enhance the energy of wireless networks and spectral efficiency by developing novel caching and energy harvesting strategies, new multiple access techniques and efficient bandwidth reuse. Moreover, investigations are being made to explore the full potential and performance limits of a variety of spectrum ranges in order to enable access to large contiguous bands of spectrum that are presently inaccessible to mobile systems.
Some of the noteworthy equipment under this facility are:
- High power computing machines
- Mobile workstations
- Software defined radios (SDRs).
Edge-Cloud Computation and Blockchain
Blockchain technology has recently generated significant research interest worldwide. This promising direction is toward the development of a fully decentralized, open infrastructure for the reliable and secure integration of CPS systems. C2PS lab hosts several types of equipment to support cloud computing and Blockchain research, as well as quantum computing. Experimentation focus on the development of a CPS infrastructure platform with emphasis on security, privacy, trust, and support for the development of Decentralized Applications (DApps). In parallel, extensive experiments are being carried out to evaluate the effect of the quality of random number generators on Bayesian deep leaning performance and big data analysis.
In the IoT domain, C2PS also hosts a range of research and commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), sensors and software to support drone related research. In C2PS lab, researchers have been developing methods that use the CPS infrastructure to support location-based authorization for UAVs and to analyze big data collected by the CPS to improve safe drone operation.
