Overview

In the frame of a partnership between Khalifa University and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), experts from the IAEA will provide an introductory course on Nuclear Law.

As a specialized field of law connected to the specificity of nuclear technology, nuclear law permeates the entire nuclear sector. Whether in the form of international treaties on the safety and security of nuclear power plants, agreements enabling the verification of nations’ nuclear non-proliferation commitments, or provisions enabling emergency preparedness and response, Nuclear Law supports all the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

Following an introduction to the IAEA and Nuclear Law, the course will provide an overview of the International Legal Frameworks for Nuclear Safety, Nuclear Security, Safeguards and Non-proliferation, and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage. It will also address the Comprehensive National Nuclear Legislation, IAEA Legislative Assistance, Nuclear Law in the context of other areas of law, and Nuclear law in the context of new technologies such as Small Modular Reactors.

Students and professionals from all academic and working backgrounds (legal and technical) are welcome to attend the course. Those who have attended the course in full will be issued a Certificate of Attendance by the IAEA.
