Dr. Bushra AlBlooshi’s Selection Reflects Growing Role of UAE in Shaping a Secure Digital Future and Strengthening Global Safety and Stability

A Khalifa University 2016 PhD graduate in Computer Engineering Dr. Bushra AlBlooshi, currently Executive Director of Cybersecurity Governance and Risk Management Department, is selected as the Middle East’s sole representative in the Critical Digital Risks Initiative, a global program led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

Dr. AlBlooshi’s selection reflects the growing role of the UAE in shaping a secure digital future and strengthening global safety and stability. The program aims to protect communities digitally and safeguard vital cross-border systems. This also comes as the UAE maintains its position within the highest “Role Modelling” tier in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index issued by the ITU.

As part of this international group, Dr. AlBlooshi will contribute to the development of high-impact risk scenarios, analyzing interdependencies across critical sectors, and supporting the development of frameworks that enhance preparedness and recovery capabilities in response to large-scale digital crises.

As part of the Critical Digital Risks Initiative, Dr. AlBlooshi has already contributed to the development of the international report ‘When Digital Systems Fail: The Hidden Risks of Our Digital World’, issued by the ITU in collaboration with the UNDRR, and Sciences Po Paris.

The report addresses a range of emerging digital risks, including severe solar storms, submarine cable disruptions, satellite congestion, and extreme weather events, along with their potential impact on critical sectors such as healthcare, financial services, transportation, and emergency services.

Dr. AlBlooshi said: “Selected as the only representative from the Middle East in the Critical Digital Risks Initiative is both a profound honor and a responsibility I carry with pride. As our world becomes increasingly digital, safeguarding trust, resilience, and security remains essential to protecting lives, economies, and future generations. This opportunity reflects the UAE’s strong commitment to global collaboration and leadership in cybersecurity, and I am proud to contribute to shaping a safer, more resilient digital future for communities around the world.”
