Biography

Dr. Tarek H.M. El-Fouly received his BSc and MSc degrees from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 1996 and 2002, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University Of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 2008. During the course of his PhD studies, he received Dr. M. Chandrashekar Memorial Award in Sustainable Energy, University of Waterloo, in 2003 and the Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST) in 2005.

Dr. El-Fouly joined CanmetENERGY, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Government of Canada, in 2008, as a Transmission and Distribution Research Engineer. In 2010, he was appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Waterloo. In 2014, he was promoted to Smart Microgrids Research Manager at CanmetENERGY, Natural Resources Canada. During this period, he managed 5 research and development projects and participated in managing 1 utility-scale smart grid demonstration project in Iqaluit. Moreover, he chaired and managed an advisory committee, the “NRCan Technical Expert Interest Group for Remote Microgrids”, and served as a technical reviewers in 3 committees for research, and development and demonstration funds project proposals. 

On January 2015, Dr. El-Fouly joined Khalifa University of Science and Technology as an Assistant Professor at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and got promoted to Associate Professor on July 2019. In 2016, he got Elevated to the grade of Senior member at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is currently serving as the Vice Chair of UAE IEEE Power and Energy Society Chapter. In June 2021, he has been selcted as a member in the Engineering & Technology Category at the Mohammed bin Rashed Academy of Scientists (MBRAS), U.A.E. 

Dr. El-Fouly conducts research on smart grids, microgrids, remote isolated grids, high penetration of renewable energy resources and integration of electrical energy storage systems. He is currently serving as Associate Editor for the IEEE Access and the IET Renewable Power Generation.

Research Projects

MoM: Microgrid of Microgrids

There has been an increasing global interest in the integration of renewable energy resources (RESs) and energy storage systems into the distribution networks. Moreover, large-scale deployment of electric vehicles and their charging stations has been gaining interest worldwide.

Inspired by the “System of Systems (SoS)” concept, we envision, the future power distribution systems as “Microgrid of Microgrids (MoM)” and that is a group of dedicated microgrids with their own generation, storage and controllable loads that are capable of operating independently and flexibly reconfigure themselves to create new groups of more complex system(s) that improve system reliability, stability, and efficiency through an adaptive control and self-healing strategies. Such MoM concept has never been proposed or investigated before.

This project intends to develop a new three-level, hierarchical adaptive control and self-healing strategies for smart MoM distribution networks to enable flexible-boundaries and coordinated-structure of multiple microgrids to improve the overall distribution system performance

Smart Efficient Energy Management System for Charging Stations Infrastructure (SEEMS)

There has been an increasing global interest in large-scale deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) and their charging stations. Electric vehicles offer many advantages including GHG emission reduction and better perfromance and efficiney. Several Countries have set policies to facilitate such large scale deployment. In 2018, the global electric car fleet exceeded 5.1 million.

The proposed project aims to develop an integrated smart energy management system that is capable of efficiently manage the energy consumption for a large-scale deployed electric vehicle charging station infrastructure including public and private station and enabling vehicle to grid discharge while considering both traffic and power network load profiles. The developed system will also investigate the optimal integration of mobile charging stations to the overall infrastructure.

Online Forecasting Tools for Renewable Energy Integration

With the increasing share of renewables in the total energy mix in the UAE, the grid operators will encounter security issues which are caused by the intermittent nature of the installed solar power plants and the impact of weather variability, mainly from airborne dust and clouds, on solar plant performance. Consequently, the main objective of forecasting solar power generation is to determine with high accuracy the output of solar power plants in the near term. In addition, accurate solar irradiance, aerosol, temperature, cloud formations, humidity, and wind speed forecasts over different time horizons are pertinent to successful grid integration of solar plants whilst supporting grid reliability and the economical operation.
