Dr. Young-Ji Byon was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1979. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1994. Following first two years of an elite foundation program, Engineering Science, at the University of Toronto, Canada, he received a B.A.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Manufacturing Engineering, University of Toronto, in 2003. He received M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Transportation Engineering from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Toronto, in 2005 and 2010, respectively. From 2003 to 2009, he worked as a Researcher at the ITS Lab, University of Toronto. From 2009 to 2010, he was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Chile, Santiago, Chile. From 2010 to 2011, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Calgary, Canada. In 2012, he joined the Department of Civil Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, UAE, as an Assistant Professor. In 2017, he was promoted to an Associate Professor rank. He has served as an Associate Chair of the department since 2012. He has led the successful initial ABET accreditation of Civil Engineering at Khalifa University in 2017 and has led and coordinated associated ABET assessment procedures to the present-day.
