Biography

Dr. Thanos Stouraitis is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (EECS) at KU. He is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Patras, where he founded and directed the International Graduate Program on Signal Processing Systems and Communications, a collaboration of the University of Patras (UP) and other European and American Universities. He joined Khalifa University as a Professor and Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in 2015 and he was the founding Chair of the EECS department during 2017-2022.

Dr. Stouraitis is an IEEE Life Fellow for his "contributions in digital signal processing architectures and computer arithmetic.” He has received several prestigious technical awards, including the IEEE Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award.

Dr. Stouraitis has served as President of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society from 2012-13. He has served as Chair of the VLSI Systems and Applications (VSA) Technical Committee and as a member of the DSP and the Multimedia Technical Committees of the IEEE CAS Society. He was a chair of the Long-term Strategy and Vision Committee of IEEE CAS Society. He was also a founder and Chair of the IEEE Greece Signal Processing chapter.

He served as Director of the Electronics and Computers Division of the UP Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He served on the National Scientific Board for Mathematics and Informatics of Greece and was also a founding member of the Council of the University of Central Greece. He has served on the faculties of Ohio State University, University of Florida, New York University, and University of British Columbia.

Dr. Stouraitis holds a PhD from the University of Florida (for which he received the UF Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award), an MSc in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, an MSc in Electronic Automation from the University of Athens, and a BSc in Physics from the University of Athens.

His current research interests include the design of artificial intelligence hardware accelerators, signal and image processing systems, application-specific processor technology and design, computer arithmetic, and design and architecture of optimal digital systems with emphasis on cryptographic systems.

Dr. Stouraitis has authored about 200 technical papers, several book chapters, and holds one USA patent on DSP processor design. He has authored the University of Patras Press book "Digital Signal Processing," and co-authored the Marcel Dekker Inc. book "Digital Filter Design Software for the IBM PC," and the 2017 “Arithmetic Circuits for DSP Applications,” book by Wiley-IEEE Press. He has led several processor design projects funded by the European Union, American organizations, and the Greek government and industry, with a total funding totaling more than EUR 3 million. He has delivered many keynote speeches at international IEEE conferences.

He currently serves as Book Series Editor for the River Publishers Series on Signal, Image and Speech Processing, as well as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers. Dr. Stouraitis served as Editor for the Journal of Circuits, Systems, and Computers, as well as, Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems and IEEE Transactions on VLSI, Editor for the IEEE Interactive Magazines, Editor-at-Large for Marcel Dekker Inc., and as a consultant for various industries. He regularly reviews for the IEEE SP, C&S, C, and Education Transactions, for IEE Proceedings E, F, G, and for conferences like IEEE ISCAS, ICASSP, VLSI, SiPS, Computer Arithmetic, Euro DAC, etc. He regularly reviews proposals for NSF, the European Commission, and other agencies, and serves as external advisor and examiner for Ph.D. theses in several Universities around the world.

He has served as general chair of many IEEE conferences, including the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems 2006, Digital Media Industry and Academic Forum 2016, International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology 2016, International Symposium on Communications, Control, and Signal Processing 2014, International Conference on Electronics Circuits and Systems in 1996 and 2010, CASFEST 2010, International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing 2008, International Workshop on Signal Processing Systems 2005, and AICAS 2024. He served as Industry Forum & Exhibition Chair of GlobeCom 2018. He was Technical Program Chair of MWSCAS 2016, Eusipco 1998, ICECS 1999, and VLSI-SoC 2022. He has served as Chair or as a member of the Technical Program Committees of a multitude of IEEE Conferences.

Research Projects

Project: Alternative Numbering Systems and Architectures for AI Edge Devices (AH-2983)

Funding Organization: SRG.org (USA)

Primary Aim

Design and implement an efficient AI architecture for edge devices through the employment of:

uncommon number representation schemes (Residue Number System)
enhanced memory access
 parallel processing elements.
The aim is to enhance performance in terms of energy, speed, and area efficiency of AI hardware.

Anticipated Results and Contributions:

  • Design of a fully RNS-based digital DNN accelerator targeting low-power edge devices, which will be implemented and fabricated in a CMOS chip.
  • Efficient implementation of RNS-based activation function and other units, so that RNS usage can be extended beyond CNN implementations.
  • Exploitation of basic RNS properties and RNS-induced bit-level weight sparsity to reduce convolution complexity and increase the throughput of RNS-based CNN accelerators
  • Investigation of potential usage of RNS for In-Memory-Computing systems with a quantitative investigation of the various related trade-offs.
