The increase in global human population will create the need for alternative food and energy sources. Microalgae are well known as a source of food and energy that can replace crops for food production due to their biosynthesis characteristics that allow the production of various compounds including lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and carotenoids. Microalgae are also currently being promoted as an ideal third generation biofuel feedstock because of their rapid growth rate, CO2 fixation ability and high production capacity of lipids; they also do not compete with food or feed crops, and can be produced on non-arable land. These microalgae-derived bioproducts have a wide range of applications in biotechnology industries. The utilization of microalgae biomass in product formulation is generally not diversified; a higher demand for microalgal feedstock will be advantageous for large-scale microalgae cultivation, as the production and downstream processing are highly energy-intensive and expensive. This research project aims to develop a more sustainable biorefinery approach in valorising the remaining microalgae-derived compounds to be supplied in different commercial markets. This is to ensure that high-value products from microalgae can be transformed into various valuable products and to mitigate the economic feasibility of microalgae biorefinery. Multiphase extraction for the recovery of many biomolecules at the same time is a green and efficient bioprocessing technique. Up to date, the potential of solvent sublation incorporated with three-phase partitioning to form Multiphase Flotation (MPF) system for simultaneous extraction of several compounds from microalgae has yet to be explored. This study will focus on the creation of superfood from microalgae through cultivation, extraction and formulation of highly valuable compounds from microalgae. The scopes cover upstream processes (strain selection, cultivation and harvesting of microalgae), downstream processes (partitioning behaviours and mechanism of MPF system for recovering microalgae-derived products), and product formulation (food processing and feedstock valorization). The project intends to offer a holistic strategy for production of microalgal products and valorization of microalgal feedstock. This microalgal biorefinery that will be useful and adaptable by researchers and the food industries for future food application in UAE and the world.
