Biography

Prof. Mohamed El Moursi received his BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from Mansoura University, Egypt, in 1997 and 2002 respectively. He received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from the University of New Brunswick (UNB), New Brunswick, Canada, in 2005. He worked as a designer engineer for photovoltaic power systems (1997-1998) for an agent of Siemens (ASET Company). He joined McGill University as a postdoctoral fellow in the power electronics group. Then, he joined Vestas Wind Systems in 2006, where he worked in the technology R&D with the Wind Power Plant Group, Arhus, Denmark, until October 2008. He later worked at Abu Dhabi Transmission and Dispatch Company, TRANSCO, as senior study and planning engineer until September 2011. Then, he joined Masdar Institute (currently Khalifa University) on September 2011 as an Assistant Professor and then as an Associate Professor from January 2014 to July 2018. He was a Visiting Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA in 2012.

Dr. Mohamed El Moursi is currently a Professor with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and the Deputy Director of Advanced Power and Energy Center (APEC) at Khalifa University. He is an IEEE Fellow (Class of 2024) for contributions to “Renewable Energy Integration and Hybrid Power Grids”, and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES). He is also Theme Director of renewable energy Integration at Virtual Research Institute (VRI) for Sustainable Energy Production, Storage, and Utilization (funded by ASPIRE).

He is a broad proven industrial and academic expert in the field of renewable energy integration and smart grid. He received several international and national prestigious awards such as Dr. El Moursi and his research team received first place in the R&D Award category for Universities and Research Centers from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, UAE, for the development of the SAVE software in 2023. He received Khalifa Award for Education (Distinguished University Professor) in 2022; Outstanding Associate Editor Award for the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems in 2021, Member for MOHAMED BIN RASHID Scientists Council, UAE on July 2021; selected to be among the top scientists and received the 10 years UAE Gold Visa in 2020; Mission Innovation Champion in 2019 at Fourth Mission Innovation Ministerial event in Vancouver, Canada on May 2019; Gold Medal from Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee for Innovation in 2015;  Faculty Research Excellence Award 2018 for the College of Engineering for Professor rank at Khalifa University. In addition, he was conferred the Faculty Award for Excellence in Collaborative Research (Academic Year 2012-2013) in recognition of his research achievements as interdisciplinary faculty at Masdar Institute; and he was awarded the Expert and Key Employee benefits in Denmark (2006-2009) along with other prestigious awards.

He was successfully able to secure a large amount of research grants based on internally and externally funded projects which amount $8,054,129 from Europe, North America, GCC countries and South Korea. He has so far published 232 scientific articles in top-quality journals and conferences with a record of 126 IEEE Transactions, and has four U.S. patents. He is an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, IEEE Transactions on Power System (2017-2023); Guest Editor-in-Chief for a special section of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and Power Delivery (2019- 2021); Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics; Regional Editor of IET RPG and Associate Editor for IET Power Electronics. He was elected in 2018 to chair the IEEE PES chapter in UAE after serving more than two years as a Vice Chair (2015-2018). In addition, he has graduated high caliber (10) PhD and (32) MSc students, whereby he achieved several best thesis and national awards for his students. He has designed and developed several in-house experimental prototypes. In addition, he developed operational platforms such as Stability Assessment, Visualization and Enhancement (SAVE) Software for TRANSCO network (financially supported by TRANSCO and Manitoba Hydro International, Canada) and Renewable Energy Management System (REMS) Tool, financially supported by ELIA GRID International (Belgium).
