Research
Research Interests
  • My research interests focus broadly on the role of the kidney in hypertension and in pregnancy. Specifically, I have been studying the role of the kidney in the development and maintenance of hypertension and the renal adaptations to essential hypertension. In addition, I have studied the mechanisms that are responsible for the renal hemodynamic, excretory, as well as cardiovascular adaptations during pregnancy. Another area of research interest that we have developed in my lab is to study renal and cardiovascular functions in diabetic pregnancy, and development and maintenance of hypertension in a diet-induced obesity rat model. Recently, we have been studying the signaling pathway of cardiac striatin during hypertension and diabetes.

Research Projects

Signaling pathway of cardiac striatin during hypertension

Striatin (STRN) is a protein that is expressed in cardiac myocytes and plays an important role in maintaining normal contraction. It is possible that STRN does not function normally in the contraction of hypertrophied and/or dilated hearts. The Okamoto spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is accepted as an animal model for human essential hypertension. Chronic hypertension in the SHR is often associated with cardiac remodeling and impaired myocardial contractility. We are investigating the possible changes in the expression of STRN in SHR hearts during the development and maintenance of hypertension in these rats.
