Course Description

This course covers the fundamentals of nowadays industrial data communication systems, such as field bus foundation, HART, industrial Ethernet, and Profibus, at their different OSI layers. Topics include various transmission media, modulation/demodulation (AM, FM, PM); signal coding techniques, error detection and corrections. The course also covers many real-world examples of data communication including wired and wireless Local Area Networks (LAN): topologies, Media Access Control (MAC), access techniques, and Wide Area Network (WAN): Introduction to industrial internet protocols. The course will also tackle modern emerging topics in Industrial data communication such as Internet of Things (IoT), data security, and Quality of Service. 

Learning Outcomes: 

After successfully completing the course, students will be:

  • Able to identify and get acquainted with OSI layers associated to modern industrial data communication systems
  • Get acquainted with different designs of contemporary industrial data communication systems
  • Able to design different communication systems using basic modulation types such as amplitude, phase and frequency modulation
  • Able to identify the characteristics of signals propagated through different transmission media, including concepts of attenuation and noise 
  • Able to apply signal encoding techniques, error-detection, and error-correction techniques
