Dr Karki received his Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s and PhD in Mechatronics Engineering, System Engineering and Engineering respectively from Tokyo University of Technology in Japan in 2009.  Before his current appointment, he was a lecturer at the Department Tokyo University of Technology (2006-2007). He joined the Petroleum Institute, now known as Khalifa University in year 2008. Dr. Karki served as Internship program Director (2011-2013) and was the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (2013-2016). He is currently a faculty in the mechanical engineering department and serves an associate professor.

Research Projects:

Currently we are working of a novel control mechanism for autonomous inspection of the linear ground structure such as oil and gas pipelines by an UAV flying at very low altitude. Ground laid linear pipelines are represented as straight-lines in bottom camera view and therefore their tracking by an UAV involves identification and tracking of straight lines. Canny edge detector and Hough line transformation are used to extract parameters of ground structure, which are subsequently fed in to the angular and lateral correction loops of the autonomous controller of the UAV. Therefore accurate tracking of pipeline is achieved with acceptable error margin.
