Dr. Ayesha Mohamed AlMarzooqi joined Khalifa University (Masdar campus) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Chemical Engineering in 2015. She received her PhD from University of Cambridge, UK, in the field of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. During her thesis work she developed several novel experimental methods that allowed for the clarification of the critical role that RBPs play in the control of the degradation of RNA molecules. These methodologies elicited excitement and interest in the scientific community, driving international collaborations and publications in high impact scientific journals.

Dr. Al Marzooqi has been recognized for her scientific and industrial contributions to the UAE and abroad. She has received a number of awards including the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid scholarship award (EDAAD), Masdar scholarship award, Management of Technology & Innovation award (University of Cambridge UK), and won a prize and award for the most innovative research in scientific and engineering disciplines category in the UAE and Sheikh Rashid Scientific Distinction Award.

Dr. Al Marzooqi’s research laboratory focuses on applying biotechnology tools and engineering principles to address challenges facing society in the areas of water and environment, wastewater recycling/reuse, food security and human health in the United Arab Emirates. Her laboratory is working on several key projects of importance to the UAE. These are:

  • Biomimicry strategies to reduce the energy and water use of UAE cooling systems.
  • Impact of water quality on the cooling systems in the UAE.
  • Establishment of a halophyte molecular breeding platform.
  • RNA profile of microalgae isolates under UAE environmental stress conditions.
  • Proteomics and metabolic analysis of microalgae species involved in bioregeneration of aquaculture and hydroponics wastewater.
