Prof. Isakovic’s Laboratory for Nanophotonics, Spintronics and Complex Systems

As part of Prof. Isakovic’s contributions to Khalifa University, he has developed a laboratory for Nanophotonics, Spintronics and Complex Systems. Research in Prof. Isakovic’s laboratory is focused on utilizing fundamental principles in solving problems of relevance to sustainable society.  Through this process, he aims for a thorough training of undergraduate and graduate students, while building an adjustable hardware and software infrastructure that can support multiple interdisciplinary research projects.  Outside of Department of Applied Sciences, he is closely associated with the KSRC (Khalifa Semiconductor Research Center) and Biomedical Engineering Department, of which he is an adjunct faculty.  He closely collaborates with Drs. Hitt, Gater, Teo, Yapici and Singh at KU, and Dr. Ruta of KU-EBTIC. In addition to resources, Prof. Isakovic developed as a part of his institution-wide start-up efforts, he closely collaborates with a number of colleagues at Cornell University (CNF, CCMR) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (NSLS-II, CFN).

The research methods utilized in Prof. Isakovic’s Laboratory include micro- and nanofabrication, broad range spectroscopy (infrared, UV and X-ray), photo- and electroluminescence,  fluorescence, X-ray micro- and nano-diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, surface and electron probe microscopies (AFM, SEM, TEM),  mesoscopic and nanoscale transport, noise characterization, nanodevice modeling and computational problems of interest to information processing and healthcare industry.

The research efforts in Prof. Isakovic’s Lab are currently organized in these three tracks:

  • Nanoscience and nanotechnology issues related to minimization of energy losses in modern information processing. This research has been funded by two ATIC-SRC grants, one for nanocontacts, the other for optimization of magnetic tunnel junctions.
  • Utilization of biologically motivated processes in modern computing and understanding of the protein radiation damage – funded by UAE ICT Fund, and in part by ATIC-SRC Center for Excellence.
  • Research in novel educational methods in STEM, specifically, collaborative learning methods, such as Collaborative Workshop Physics originated by KU faculty, G. W. Hitt and A. F. Isakovic, and game-based learning in general chemistry for engineers.
