The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is a thriving community of scholars, with high level expertise in teaching and research. As part of the College of Arts and Science, the department runs an interdisciplinary and diverse set of courses that provide essential analytical context to technologically oriented degree programs across the University.
The department offers a Minor in General Business, as well as courses in the following areas: Islamic Studies, Regional Cultural Studies, Arabic, Business Studies, Languages, Psychology, Sociology and History.
Science, engineering and medicine are vital drivers of human progress, yet a knowledge of the humanities and social sciences is essential for understanding the philosophical, historical, cultural and ethical dimensions of technological change.
The Department’s courses emphasize the development of communication and critical thinking skills, and equip technology focused students with the tools and vocabulary to engage in ongoing conversations about technological change and cultural systems.
The department is highly research active, and our faculty publish in some of the world’s top academic journals. Research is clustered into two main groupings - sustainability and humanities - with interdisciplinary research encouraged. The faculty are the recipients of numerous awards for research and teaching excellence, with each drawing upon their own research expertise to inform and advance their teaching. The department’s activities are global in scope, and faculty are highly engaged in international collaborations and networks.
