Mary Hatakka has taught English mainly to engineering students in Europe and in the Middle East for more than ten years. Her work has evolved from teaching ESP in the 1980s to developing academic literacy skills and critical thinking. She has presented at international conferences and written course books for technical English that are in use in Italy and Finland.

Dr. Hatakka’s teaching focuses on the development of academic literacy and critical thinking skills, lifelong learning, and teamwork and research skills specifically for engineering students. She teaches a wide range of courses, including English Communication I, Strategies for Team-Based Engineering Problem Solving, and Introduction to Psychology.

Dr. Hatakka’s research interests include developing academic literacy skills in general and specifically for engineering students; combatting plagiarism; teaching critical thinking; and developing online materials. Her current projects include the development of materials for flipped and online learning.
