Francis is full professor at the Chemistry department at Khalifa University. Prior to this, he was professor at Ghent University (Belgium). In 2011 he was appointed chair professor at Wuhan University of Technology and simultaneously he was professor at Ghent University Global Campus (Korea). He is author of about 300 publications and holds more then 20 patents in the areas of structure and mechanisms of organometallic materials chemistry, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, MOFs and MOPs, activation of small molecules and olefin metathesis.
In 2004, he founded a spin-off company based on olefin metathesis catalysts. He received the title of Honorary professor from Liaoning University and Shenyang University of Chemical Technology. Among other awards and honors are the appointment in 2012 as a ‘‘National Distinguished Expert in the P.R. China. In 2016 he was selected as Distinguished Fellow of the International Engineering and Technology Institute (IETI, Hong Kong) and also nominated as Director-General of IETI. He received the 2017 IAAM Medal for notable and outstanding research in the field of Advanced Materials Science & Technology, awarded by the International Association of Advanced Materials. Since 2008 he has been the Editor of Applied Organometallic Chemistry and is on the editorial boards of Inorganics (MDPI AG, 2017) and Advances in Materials Research (2017).
