Avin earned a PhD in the field of Nuclear Analytical Chemistry in 1982; and double masters in Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (1979) and Applied Nuclear Physics (1987). He has acquired 35 years of experience in research and teaching. He served as HoD of Chemistry at the Petroleum Institute (PI) between 2013-2016. For the past 20 years he was based in the Arabian Gulf (Oman, UAE) and is familiar with the culture and people of the region. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Dr. Pillay is skilled in a range of instrumental and nuclear techniques including neutron activation, XRF, gamma ray spectroscopy, ICP-MS, and atomic absorption and emission methods. He is experienced in studies in nuclear and atomic science; and in the areas of analytical and environmental chemistry, with particular emphasis on applications using hybrid plasma mass spectrometry.
