Institutes and Centers

Khalifa University is home to the UAE’s leading research institutes and centers, where challenges of relevance to the region and world are addressed in a systematic and targeted manner by innovative researchers working together in world-class facilities. These research clusters will create the foundation for the University to become a global leader in use-inspired research. The University’s two major institutes are the Masdar Institute, under which primarily sustainability focused research centers are grouped, and the Petroleum Institute, under which primarily hydrocarbon production and exploration focused research centers are grouped.

Masdar Institute research centers:

Research Center for Renewable Energy Mapping and Assessment (ReCREMA)

ReCREMA was established to support the UAE and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in their advancement of a publicly-accessible atlas of solar and wind resources. The center also aims to develop regional knowledge and leadership in renewable energy assessment and mapping for the Arabian Peninsula and countries with similar climates, mainly in Africa.

Research Priority: Clean and Renewable Energy

Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium (SBRC)

The SBRC was established as a non-profit consortium at Masdar Institute to lead joint research and advancement of sustainable aviation biofuels. A key part of its research activity has been the initiation of a large-scale research program on alternative fuels derived from halophytic (saltwater tolerant) plants, called the Seawater Energy and Agriculture System (SEAS).

Petroleum Institute research center

Gas Research Center

The GRC was launched to develop, build and strengthen applied gas research capabilities. It also works to enhance the technology know-how of its main collaborator, Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Limited (GASCO) to address current and emerging gas challenges and promote the safe and efficient operations.

Research Priority: Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production

Aerospace Research and Innovation Center (ARIC)

ARIC was established to undertake cutting-edge research in aerospace engineering. The center also acts as a global research hub – collaborating with leading universities across the world, developing research opportunities over a broad spectrum of areas, and assisting technology transfer and innovation possibilities across the aerospace sector.

Research Priorities: Aerospace; Robotics, AI and Data Science; Advanced Materials and Manufacturing

ATIC SRC Center of Excellence for Energy Efficient Electronic Systems (ACE4S)

ACE4S was established to support the development of energy-efficient wireless sensors and advances in the areas of sensor technologies, power management, energy harvesting, and wireless communications circuits. ACE4S also seeks to produce integrated prototypes for mobile healthcare applications as well as knowledge and research relevant to MEMS and photonic sensors, body-communication channels, transceivers circuits, energy-efficient storage, and secure sensing.

Center of Excellence on Integrated Photonics

The Center of Excellence for Integrated Photonics was established to develop advanced silicon photonics components needed to support the transfer of massive amounts of data within data centers with high energy-efficiency and at a low cost. Its goal is to improve the energy efficiency and speed of data transmission within data centers by advancing photonics-electronics integrated systems so that the people, cars, devices, and cities that rely on that data will be able to access it instantly.

Center of Excellence on RF/5G Communications

The Center of Excellence on RF/5G Communications was established to develop transceivers equipped with integrated circuits embedded with hundreds of antennas capable of high-speed data transfer at the bandwidth frequencies being opened up for 5G networks. This includes the 28 GHz, 38 GHz and 73-76 GHz radio frequency bands.

Etisalat-British Telecom Innovation Center (EBTIC)

EBTIC was established to be an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) research and innovation center. It aims to advance intelligent systems technologies for the Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and NGN-enabled ICT applications and services, in order to put in place the support infrastructure to facilitate, develop and enable the Digital Networked Economy in the UAE and beyond.

Information Security Research Center (ISRC)

The ISRC is focused on research that covers all areas of cyber security, including wireless and mobile security, cloud and Big Data security, security of cyber-physical systems, Internet of Things, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) security, auditing, penetration testing, digital forensics, etc.

Research Priority: Security

Khalifa University Robotics Institute (KURI)

KURI is Khalifa University’s hub for robotics-related research, leveraging state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and collaborations with leading international robotics labs and industrial partners. Its research is focused on three areas -- aerial, ground and marine robotic vehicles; manufacturing automation; and biorobotics – and its research is applied to safety and security, manufacturing and healthcare industrial sectors.

Research Priority: Robotics, AI and Data Science

Khalifa University Center of Excellence in Biotechnology (KUCEB)

KUCEB focuses on applying genomics to human health, disease and medicine to the treatment and welfare of individuals of Arab descent. The center works in three broad areas of health: metabolic diseases (i.e. diabetes, coronary heart disease); cancer, focusing mainly childhood cancers; and mental disorders.

Research Priority: Healthcare

Visual Signal Analysis and Processing (VSAP) Center

The VSAP’s research is centered on three main application domains: surveillance and machine vision; video communications and image security; and biometrics and bio-imaging. It leads Khalifa University’s efforts research in image and video analysis and processing to promote the creation of transformative technologies that will benefit the UAE’s knowledge economy.
