- About Us
The merger between the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI), the Petroleum Institute (PI) and the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) to form the Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) was intended to consolidate the resources and infrastructure of three of the most respected academic institutions in the UAE and the Middle East. The resulting unified University reinforces Abu Dhabi’s and the UAE’s commitment to pursuing the development of world-class research and human capital initiatives.
KU is an independent entity with its own Board of Trustees that is accountable to the Government of Abu Dhabi for its charter.
For existing students graduating in the 2016-2017 academic year, the MIT Certificate of Achievement is being granted as it has been previously. Discussions with MIT are ongoing to understand what role they will play in the new Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
At the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, all new students at both the undergraduate and graduate level will study in a gender-integrated environment. Students who enrolled at the gender segregated Petroleum Institute before the merger will be able to complete their programs under the preexisting segregated educational arrangement.
The University celebrates diversity and welcomes both UAE National and international applicants.
The new unified Khalifa University of Science and Technology has three campuses - a main campus and two satellite campuses in Sas Al Nakhl and Masdar City. The campuses include:
Tuition waivers and stipend support are provided for undergraduate and graduate UAE nationals, but only limited tuition waivers are provided for undergraduate international students. Tuition waivers and stipend support are offered for graduate international students working on research projects. For more information, visit the Scholarship page.
All academic programs at KU are accredited with the CAA of the UAE Ministry of Education and ABET accreditation for the new programs is underway.
KU offers 12 Bachelor’s, 23 Master’s, and seven Doctoral degrees. Optional concentrations are listed in sub-points.
Undergraduate admission to KU is highly competitive. To be considered for admission, potential students must meet strict criteria and requirements, which are listed on the Undergraduate Admissions Requirements page.
The requirements for admission to KU graduate programs are outlined on our Graduate Admissions requirements page. Please note that admission is highly competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee entry to our programs.
All applicants who meet the minimum requirements must pass an entrance exam in mathematics (algebra and precalculus) math and physics admission tests. This does not apply to those who are eligible for Exemption From Entry Assessment.
Applications can be submitted via KU website on or before the date listed by the Admissions teams on the Undergraduate Admissions page or the Graduate Admissions page.
Applications for graduate admissions can be made online.

Applicants can only apply to one program per semester.

Most applicants can satisfy this requirement by passing an English-based language test such as the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (iBT). Potential students who have not met the minimum required score in an English proficiency test are required to sit an English language admission test. The purpose of this test is to determine the level of English course in which the student will be placed. What are IELTS and TOEFL test dates? Are they given at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology? IELTS and TOEFL exams are not offered at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology and test dates vary by location.
