Doctor of Philosophy in Petroleum Geoscience

The Department of Earth Sciences has defined the goals of its PhD in Petroleum Geosciences program as follows:

  • stimulate research and development to foster innovative solutions to challenges in science, technology, and engineering;
  • develop the next generation of leaders in academia to drive a knowledge economy in the UAE;
  • advance the technological profile of the UAE and the regional oil and gas industry.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) define what PhD graduates will be able to do 2-3 years after graduation. After completing their PhD, the graduates of the PhD in Petroleum Geosciences program will be able to do the following:

  • contribute to the advancement of leading-edge knowledge across multiple engineering and sciences disciplines;
  • direct original research and disseminate knowledge to a variety of audiences; and
  • provide active and exceptional service to the profession and the society at large.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are defined as statements describing what our PhD graduates are expected to know and be able to do upon graduation. Upon successful completion of the PhD in Petroleum Geosciences program, graduates will possess the knowledge, skills, and aspects of competence listed below:

  • an ability to recognize, evaluate, interpret, and understand issues and opportunities at the frontiers of knowledge;
  • an ability to integrate and apply knowledge across disciplinary boundaries in order to create new knowledge;
  • an ability to conduct independent original research that results in significant contribution to knowledge in the field;
  • the competencies necessary to disseminate knowledge and research findings in a variety of formats to the scientific community and public at large;
  • a propensity to engage in life-long learning and self-development in their field as a way of contributing to its future advancement;
  • a commitment to ethical behavior in research and professional activities;
  • the skills required to manage effectively in a multidisciplinary collaborative environment

Program Completion Requirements

Students of the PhD in Petroleum Geosciences are required to complete 60 credit hours; 24 credit hours are required for coursework, and 36 credit hours for thesis research. The required and elective courses of the PhD in Petroleum Geosciences are listed in the following table. Written and oral qualifying exams have to be passed before students can start research that leads to a PhD dissertation.

Five elective courses have to be completed out of which at least two have to be taken from within the Department of Earth Sciences. Up to three elective courses may come from another department at Khalifa University.
